Need a "how to" for a ghetto air box install

Would someone post some more info and a "how to" on the ghetto air box filter setup for a 2k?

Thanks, T

Directions

GAB for 2k.

Cut the top of the filter holder to the spot that holds the filter (you'll see when you look at it.) Remove the elbow that connects to the resonator underneath the stock air intake scoop. Buy some 4" clothes dryer vent tubing and connect that to the hole where the elbow attached to the stock scoop and route that tube to the bottom of the front bumper for a cold air tube. Then get a K&N panel filter for the best airflow.

Shows what it looks like completed. This shows where the cut of the air filter holder piece is. Hopefully that all makes sense. It's really not all that difficult.

How did you connect the hose to the elbow?

You get rid of the elbow and connect it directly to the inlet. Use a 3" coupler with clamps on each end. You can get it in the plumbing dept for like $6 at Home Depot.

So I need to get the 3-3 coupler and some 3 inch dryer tubing? I have seen the coupler at home depot, i got to find the tubing and i'll be all set. Any reason not to use the OEM filter with the ghetto air box setup?

Just curious, why cant you guys dish out a bit over a 100 bucks for any kind of intake, when you drive a 30k car in many cases ?..To each his own.. But I am just curious ....

The Arizona boys have done some extensive research and have found that the best track times are a result from the GAB. I'm hesitant to hack my airbox up, but there are guys that are getting traps 100+ mph with this mod only.

Also, add in the decreased likliehood of blown MAFs and you've got a winner.

from what iv'e heard about problems with other intakes, i think this is the best bang for the buck. it only costs $40-$50, and it sounds great. it may be a fluke, but my gas milage went up 40 miles on the last fillup. i dont want a blown MAF, and some people have even taken out their CAI, or frankencar and seem to enjoy this more.

granted the car will not be in any import shows anytime soon with the GAB.

I dunno, but I bet there are a few junkyards around that have one or two. The holder is the same from 2000-2003, so there are lots of them out there.

I don't think I did this right. Do I have the filter in backwards?

Well the filter can either go on the inside or the outside. If I put it on the inside, the side that has the ribs sticking out is visible (like picture 2). If I put it on the outside, the flat portion of the filter is visible (like picture 1).

Crap. Which one is it?

I figured it out. I think I have the wrong size K&N filter because it doesn't touch those tabs. But the answer is that the ribbed side is out and the filter is on the inside of the holder.

Yes, the filter goes on the inside of the holder, hence the name, "Filter holder".

What is the theory behind why this works, and how it is increasing your trap speeds ?

I don't know but it sure as hell increased noise levels. I think I can feel a difference, although I've only had the car a couple of days.

BTW- Dave, what did you run the ooglie air duct hose from? Our intakes are different than the 2K's. My 2K had the elbow joint. My 2K2 one doesn't.

Yeah, but where the hell did he run it to? There's no elbow joint to remove or anything. The bottom of the air inlet is flat with nothing running into it.

I got rid of the resinator elbow last night. I don't have a close dryer pipe thingy (I thought I did) so I have to go out and buy one . But still, the intake sound different without the elbow .

P.S. The only way to take out the intake resinator is to take out the battery right??? I have an auto tranny and there's a stupid wire thiungy magigy in the way.

You dont need to remove the battery to get it off. I think theres only 2 screws holding it. Andy, I think Dave cut the bottom of his off to make the OSCAI part of it...

New harness for what? You've got a bunch of the same crap I do... If all else fails with the resonator just pull. You dont need it. There shouldnt be anything you need to mess with under the bumper.

I kinda figured that you would have to cut it open on a 2k2. I'm going to leave it "as is" with the GAB then. The noise levels are relatively louder now with the box cut open anyhow.
