Exactly, cut the bottom off of that elbow, and attach a hose to it, then route the hose down to the splash guard, cut out a little of it, and put in a gutter downspout, screw it to the splash guard, then attatch the hose. Now you have a ram-air scoop for those top end runs.
Thanks, guys. I was hoping not to cut off the stock intake elbow in case I need to visit the dealer. Maybe there's something I can rig up to that rectangular opening in the airbox and then to the splash guard for the outside air.

I don't understand why everyone fears the dealer, does he make your payments? Is he on your registration? Christ, it's your car, and making it your car involves making changes to it to customize it. If you follow this same theory, if you add a sub, or an Amp, you could void your warranty too. If you lay over and get your claim denied by the dealer, then you deserve it. You guys mod cars like they're not yours. Flame suit on.......

No flames for you, but because the MAF is inherently weak in the 2K2/3, I don't want a hassle from the dealer in the event I blow one and need a replacement. With the hack job, I doubt they would replace it free. I'd love to have an 'unhacked' one that I can put on for dealer visits, but I can't afford that right now. Hell, the filter holder is $87!!

How much is the filter holder from Dave B? Junk yards probably have a ton of them too.

With or w/o his help for the price its like $40-$50 ish so its not a major problem if you need to just buy 1. It will be a special order for sure but its not an expesive item.

Since the inlet hose is exposed on the bottom of the car, is there much concern for water or other debris reaching the filter?

Thanks, T

Water weighs more than air so its not likely it would be able to get all the way up the tube and into your intake box. Not to mention the tube goes straight up for about a foot as well.

Nah I dont think so, cold air setups had this problem because the only place to let in air from (filter) was exposed to water when it rained. If you set up the Ghetto box this way you have no worries of this happening. Reason is you have more then one opening to let in air, a total of 3. The front air scoop, the top the the air box as well as the tube goin to the bottom. If for some reason the bottom one got flooded the other two would have to be closed shut in order for a vaccum to be created to allow the water to enter in and hydrolock the engine. (that sucks, ive seen it sooo many times )

What about sticks and stones that may come from highway driving? Will that be an issue? I am referring to this setup right here:

Before anyone else here does the GAB you may want to see my new twist on this. Early last year when I got my car I came very close to doing this exact same thing but I decided I didn't want to cut any of the OEM parts. Lately I have been swapping intakes back and fourth because of trips to the dealer for warranty work. I really love the sleeper look and the quietness of the stock airbox but I too want my 10hp back.
Today I came up with an idea that is very cheap and even more simple than cutting the filter assembly. And it is likely to be alot more quiet too. It should easily get back the missing 10hp and not bother the service department (because in most cases they'll never even notice).

Stay tuned....

If a stick gets stuck in there then yank it out, not too likley a stick will pefectly get in there but there is a chance. If a stone gets in there then it has very little to no chance of even reaching the filter yet alone getting sucked through it. So I wouldnt worry too much.

I just cut my stock air box last night. Piece of cake with a dremel.
I wanted the sound too. I love it. I have had the JWT, Frankencar, Injen and now this. Next step is the hose.

Driving around more today I love the sound. Not quite as loud as the Frankencar but definitely there between 3 & 4K. Now my gas is going down quick again.
