Well, what do you expect for $12. The black doesn't match the dash as much as it looks like it does in this pic. But you can see it is nowhere near as nice as the OEM GXE trim. I'll be replacing mine eventually.

You got an oversized radio unit w/ your GXE, didn't you?

I just got a CD deck from Crutchfield, came with the same cheezy looking insert, and a warped plastic trim ring.

Fortunately, my GXE came with a single DIN tape deck and a pocket below. All I needed was the trim ring.

Tell me, were you cringing pulling on the dash parts when you did your install? The instructions say "pull gently". GENTLY? HAH! I was afraid I was doing something wrong and would break something

I'll post a pic when I can.

Actually I have an SE so I had the SE radio. Yeah you sure do have to yank those vents out don't ya. I'll be getting the same GXE assembly you have sometime soon.

that's the same piece that i had custom made. That trim ring that snaps in looks so bad. That's why you need to sand, lay down fiberglass and sand again. you can paint it to match then and it looks so much better, but the GXE is a better option.

Item Description
Price

003NDK778 Mounting kit
$12.00

120707550 Wiring Harness
$8.00

12040NI10 Antenna Adapter
$9.00

I HIGHLY recommend getting the wiring harness and antenna adapter, otherwise you'll have no radio reception and be doing a lot of nasty splicing.

Indeed! The wiring harness I got matched the head unit's wiring harness. That is, I just matched colors of wires up, then soldered them together. It couldn't have been simpler!

If you buy a head unit from Crutchfield, they include all 3 items for free. Makes the install a breeze.

I came accross this product and thought about how the ABS laminates could be applied, possibly, over the Crutchfield piece if you are not please with how the black plastic looks: http://www.selectproducts.com/product/abslaminates.html

The homepage is: http://www.selectproducts.com/frameindex.htm , then select "Select Products" from the left.

I've used the Crutchfield pieces in the past (not on a Max), and they don't look the best (IMO), but they do work.

Just a thought...

Thanks, but as is the radio doesn't mount too well in the crutchfield dash piece either. Its a fold down and the face can only fold down part way due to the trim. I like how the gxe trim looks much better.

Can you not sand or Dremel the Crutchfield piece so your unit folds down completely?

From your description, it sounds as if your unit swings downward, like a glove box.

Well no matter what I do, the plastic isn't going to match its going to look half-@ssed. I could go through all the trouble and maybe get it to look good, or I could just get the stock trim and have the lazy way out.

ok

much like El Guapo's, I contacted my maxima dealer and purchased the stock base gxe air dam stereo kit. It cost me like 40 bucks. It looks better than any other kits. I suggest you guys buy the OEM maxima stereo kit for the GXE. I had the 2000 SE CD piece which was entirely changed to the GXE one to fit my eclipse 7002 screen. hehe
