Intake setup

Just installed my injen yesterday and noticed the growl was quite mild, that is until i cut a hole in the bottom plastic piece below the front bumper. Just curious but do most of you guys leave that piece on or remove it all?

Re: Intake setup

I wouldnt have cut the plastic shield under the car. That is what is keeping all the water and grime off your filter. The reason the "growl" might be mild is the external air temp and the fuel u are using. I see from your profile you live in California. The fuel there is reformulated so the octane is a bit lower. The knock sensors might have retarded the timing on ur engine and made the intake a bit quieter. The reason I say is that this happened to my car. Another thing you might wanna do is that ECU TSB.

Yeah, only reason i kept the shield on is to keep at least some of the debris from flying up. The hole is adequately sized for air passage. Well, i'd just love to pump a tank full of 100 octane racefuel from the local 67 station but that 4~5 dollar price is too steep. Dissappointed to hear about the octane dilution in Cali. The ECU TSB your talking about, is that re-setting the ECU? I have yet to do that but I probably will.

I took the whole cover piece off. I just watch out for large puddles. Even getting the filter a little damp, or semi-wet most likely won't present a problem because the chances of it sucking the water through the filter up the long intake tube and into the engine are pretty slim.

I shaved about 2 tenths of a second off my quarter mile time when I took the cover off. I am desining an extension with elbow that will move the filter element itself under the frame of the car. I'll test it out next time I hit the track. I'll only have an inch and a half off the ground though when I do that. Hope I don't hit anything,

I have a question for all the intake experts...would putting a Stillen or Frankencar intake on my 2k3 require an aftermarket exhaust as well? Would it cause a reduction in performance or anything bad by putting on an intake and not doing the exhaust? Thanks for you help.

Injen=hydrolock

I have an Injen on my 2k and was cionsidering shortening the tube by about 3", moving the o2 sensor hole forward, so I could install a air bypass valve! Good Idea?

an intake without any other modifications is mostly for sound IMO. Who was that org member that dynoed all the different intakes and the only one with a significant gain was the ghetto stock airbox intake?

injen had like a 1-2 hp gain.

I am not sure about injen, but Steve from FrankenCar dynoed his intake and everything else stock and it gave about 10hp at the wheels.
I definetly felt the power after I installed it, it pulls much harder to the redline and chirping 3rd gear is pretty easy now.

The air bypass valve gets rid of the water that is sucked in, right???

Yeah that sounds good.
