Re: Re: in cabin microfilter

What I dont understand is.... people from the GD forum said they were just buying the filter and not the whole thing. I know my car doesnt come with these, so I gotta buy the whole thing. My question is how much am I expecting to pay to get one of these installed in my car and where can I get them?

I'd like to know that too. My car didn't come with it. How hard is it to install?

It takes about 15 min to install, and it comes with two filters that go in side by side (one up, one down). The hardest part is removing the door to your glove compartment... a couple of screws and two latches, really.

You have to buy only filter(usually 2-piece), there is place for them in your car too.
It'll take less time if you install them yourself than to find who'd do it for you. You can buy them from a dealer.

Can't you just clean the factory filter? I blow out the factory air filter to the engine on occasion. I replace it eventually but blowing it out does increase it's life.

Nope. It's paper. And paper doesn't clean well. Trust me I tried.

The stock filter (if included) was paper based with no lining. The replacement filters are a 2 piece set. They are in a plastic lining and are definitely better made than the stock filter.

Installation is simple. You'll need to remove your glove box to have access to the door. There are 2 screws on the bottom and 4 at the top (behind the door). But DON'T disconnect the yellow connectors from each other. That's the airbag module. Just remove the entire clip from the glove box. It's just 2 little snaps and it's off. Then, look for a white vertical door. There's a metal clip at the bottom. Remove it. Lift up on the door and remove it. Remove the old filter (if included). Clean out any dirt inside the hole where the filter is to be installed. Install the new filters. Reassemble everything. Enjoy fresh air.

It's recommended that you change the filter every year or 12k miles. I changed mine at 1 year and it was horrible. It was a white filter that was black, and also had pine straw, leaves, etc inside the box.

You can get the filter at your local dealer for under $50. Most people are reporting it to be between $35-45. But it's area based.

This filter will work on all 5th gens (all trim levels), regardless of whether or not you had it installed from the factory. All you need is the filter. You do not need anything else, as everything else is already built into the car.

The dealer will charge you $35 to install it (plus the $40-50 for the filter) for a total of about $75-85. I'd save the $$$ and do it myself.

Okay, so even if I dont have in-cabin microfilter when I first bought my car, all I need is the filter only? Seems weird. Sorry, I just woke up.

and I paid for it too....not worth going back to dealer a year & half later complaining that I got no filters & just put in new ones

Yeah, same thing happened to me. I raised holy hell. But that was after they also did 1K of damage to my car trying to fix a vent sound issue.

On the question of the microfilter, i own a 2000 SE, i was under the impression that you have a in-cabin filter only if you see a "sticker" inside the glove compartment. Can someone confirm this??

Thanks,
maxima0002

PS. I live in Canada (if that makes any difference).

The sticker is to show that is has been replaced. So I believe that you are correct... without the sticker, you *probably* have either an original (paper) filter, or no filter at all... at least, that was the case with my g/f's 2k GXE...

ah...so it shows it's been replaced.. Thanks!

How will I know whether or not I do have the In-Cabin filter (as I'd like to replace it if i do have it). I don't remember my manual stating any info on this (but i'll have to check again).

Thanks,

You'll have to check the filter itself. Use my procedure listed in this thread to help you check.

I guess I'll have to take a look this weekend. I just don't want to be disappointed if i don't have one.

The OEM in-cabin microfilter in my 2K GLE is a non-paper, frameless, coarsely pleated white felt. It takes a while to figure out where it is located but changing is fairly simple. I decided to change mine and found it was fairly well loaded with embedded dirt but no coarse particles. When I went to my dealer and discovered a 6 by 8 inch gizmo cost $50, I declined the purchase and decided to clean the thing.

I sprayed it with 409 and sloshed it around in the sink for awhile fearing it would disintigrate, but it held together and came fairly clean. Sun dried and reinstalled with a noticable increase in airflow.

It seems to be like a nylon noon-woven fabric about an eighth of an inch thick. It has no frame and is stiff enough to stand and be inserted into the slot in the duct. No one else seems to have described this type of filter element in their Max. The new ones looked similar to an air cleaner element with a frame and screen supporting a charchol impregnated paper closed pleated. Next time I may buy a new one.

Is that the best price that I can expect to find?

My local dealer had them for $35 + tax. Check your dealer to see if they are cheaper.

OK, my opinion on this incabin filter is pretty negative. I always drive with my windows down anyways so i'm breathing all kinds of stuff that flys into my face. When its time to change my filter i think i'm just gonna pull it out and not put a new one in there. would that be ok to do?

My favorite part is the lack of dust and krap that can build up on the vent louvers. The interior still gets dusty (if you drive with the windows open) but the vents stay fairly clean, easier to detail.

ok... correct me if I'm wrong...

Haven't members of the org that have 01-02's reported that the filter is washable and that some have seen a sticker inside the globebox that instructs you to do so? Just curious because I haven't looked at mine but I remember reading about this on several posts... Anyone?

Cleaning/replacing microfilter

I have a 2003 SE and I am getting a weird odor when not using the A/C. I want to check the microfilter but don't have a clue how to access it. Perhaps i missed it but the manual doesn't say squat. So, how do you access the microfilter to check it out?

The instructions on that site are for 2000-2001. Perhaps they are the same for 2003? In any event, it did not look as easy as others have said especially the part about messing with the airbag connectors. Has anyone done this on a 2003 recently?

The instructions are for years 2000-2003 and the install is no problem. Guaranteed!!!

do not disconnect the airbag connector... you'll have a SES light on, and the dealer has to reset it only...

I read the instructions of courtesyparts.com and I was able to remove the 6 screws that hold the glove box, however I couldn't take the glove box out, it will only move slightly; what else is holding the glove box to the dashboard? Should I force it out by pulling on it?

Group Deal

Can we get another group deal on these? I'm sure everyone can use a filter, because they have to be replaced eventually, right?

Hey Madmax,

With all the screws removed, gently push down on the top part of the glove box so that you can peek into the opening where all the wiring resides. The airbag connector is attached to the top of the glove box (Nissan could of easily attached this connector elsewhere?) Just use some needle nose pliers to squeeze the clips together on the connector and this should free the glove box. Also, to the right where the door molding is, you'll have to wriggle the glove box assembly to free it from this area.
