Fuel Choice?

You can use gasoline with pretty much any rating greater than 87. The car has a knock sensor, so if it detects premature combustion (knocking, pinging) from using a less that 91 octane, the engine will automatically retard the timing. This will reduce performance and may even reduce your fuel efficiency. It will not harm the engine in any way though. The manual reccomends 91 octane, so you can get fill up with 1/2 93 and 1/2 89.

I wouldnt say that it wont do any damage..
I know what putting a engine under a heavy load while the timing is retarded will do, very bad things. And detonation at the wrong time will do even worse things, like a hole in your piston. I wouldnt feel too smart if I needed my valves redone at 90K miles because I thought the manual was full of it.
That dealer can put whatever they want in it to save a buck, but dont think for a second they wont deny you warranty engine work if they can prove you were running the wrong octane.

I strictly run premium as the manual requires. I first used 91 octane and later switched to 93. I did feel crisper response using the 93 but I also get slightly worse mileage (less than 1mpg diff). Note to everyone though-never use ethanol blend fuel. I read a report that tested all major brands and the LOWEST ethanol content they found was 22%. Mitsubishi reports that injectors can only tolerate 5% at the most unless they are designed for alcohol use such as those found on FFVs (flexible fuel vehicles). Hope this helps.

I live in Nebraska. The gas I'm talking about is AMOCO ultimate. I was informed that all of their ultimate gold level gas is 93oct nationwide even though the pumps here only say 92. Also note that octane is a minimum rating R+M/2=octane so by industry standards it must meet at least that. Also, if anyone makes good gas it's AMOCO.

up here (salt lake city) the best stuff one can usually find is 91. our low-grade stuff is 85. 4300' is the low around here (the big stinky lake), downtown is at 4500 and around town gets up to 6000 feet. (even higher in park city) i guess with thinner air, lower octane ratings are necessary. (or so i've been told) i guess that makes my car slower too, but i still managed to hit our governed 133/4 mph top end pretty hard.

Not sure if it has anything to do with the company itself, or the dealers near us.. but a friend of mine with a Type-R and myself always used the Exxon around here... we both switched to Sunoco 94 and realize a smoother stronger engine.
Perhaps its Exxon's quality.. but something tells us it could be this particular distributor.
We know others that have had water in the tank that use that gas station frequently..

Most said it doesn't matter. What do you guys think?

hard8....
dont take it personally.. this has been a hot topic for the last few months with people tired of paying so much for the more expensive gas. People are just getting alittle testy about it. it really needs to be a FAQ.
