How did you break in your new engine?

Did you stick to the manufacturer's recommendation?
When did you first redline the motor?
Is break-in really necessary these days?
I heard a fast break-in results in a fast engine and taking it too easy in the beginning can glaze the pistons/bores.
Anyone?
