Engine Life?

How long does on average a Maxima engine last? What about the tranny?
What is the Maxima's weakest item?
Before I bought the Maxima I had a Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4. It's weakest link was the tranny and Mitsubishis are infamous for their lifter noise.
So...what's the story with the Nissans?
PS I just had my car for one week now and would like to know what's expecting me.
Thanks in advance.

Well the VQ is a great engine. The VG was the best outta the bunch. That engine would last over 200K easily even with abuse. No one on the org has a high mileage 2K2-2K3 so we dunno. I guess if Nissan is up to par with their build quality and you follow all the maintenance and stay N/A then you could push out 200k on the motor but the tranny is different story.

Re: Engine Life?

Can not speak to the Max ( mine is new as well)
but I put 190000 miles on my infinity G20.
It is still going strong. Not a single major problem. (The Infinity is made by Nissan).

Nissan maxes good engines!

Well the SR20DE is a vey good design. VG's and VQ's will last just as long and perhaps longer because they don't rev as high.

in what years did they have the VG in the maxima?
They started in either '84 or '85 and continued untill '94. The VQ first debuted in the '84 300ZX and is still being used today un the Xterra and the Frontier. I wish they would kill off that boat anchor.

I have a 1987 Nissan Stanza and that craps still not falling apart. It's got about 150k on it eventhough it fell victim to a flood and was out for service for a few month. We had to replace the ecu and do some other repairs but since then (1994), there hasn't been any major problems with it.
