00 Maxima - 0171 error code - SES light stays on

00 Maxima - 0171 error code - SES light stays on. Error code says something like system lean on bank 1 What the heck does this mean. The stupid dealership is trying to stick me -- had me pay for reprogramming the ECM - light stayed off for 3 days then came back on with same code. Now they want to replace the MAF ---- But I don't think that will do the trick. Any suggestions? What's the error codes for a bad MAF? Car stalls, hesitates when u 1st crank up- after 30 seconds it runs fine. Car has 80,000 miles- out of warranty by a long shot!!!!

The lean condition can be caused by an air intake leak, bad front O2 sensor, a fuel delivery problem, or a bad MAF. The car stalling and hesitating indicates a faulty MAF sensor. Call up Dave Burnette and order a replacement sensor (~$100 IIRC) and swap that out. Clear the codes and then see if it comes back.

Again, the car only hesitates, or stalls after sitting for 5 or 6 hours, the problem lasts for 30 seconds tops - then the car drives fine. Does this still sound like a MAF? If so, I'll replace it. This is for a 00 max- original MAF on it. Did they do an upgrade from the original?

if you have no other leaks in your air intake system, then it is probably a MAF that is on the verge of failing. I don't think Nissan updated the MAF for the '00/'01 models... just the '02 models were updated.
