Dealership wont advance my timing.. What should I do?

So I went and had my oil changed today and asked the mechanic to advance my timing. He went on rambling with some bull**** saying that they can't advance my timing since its programmed into the ECU. I then told him I thought that what the scanner was for, and he said they didn't have the right scanner for it. So my question is what can I do? I have a friend who works at a local Chevrolet dealership, would they have a scanner that could work? I haven't talked to him in a couple days so I couldnt ask him, what hsould i do? Thanks

not much you can do. im sure they have a consult 2 but most mechanics either do not know how to operate it or just dont want to spend the time to do it. your friend at the chevy dealership wont be off any help unless he knows a friend at the nissan/infiniti dealership.

Be realistic! Why would a nissan dealer advance your timing out of spec? The car's ECU maintains it's ignition timing to produce the best performance and economy under a wide range of operating conditions and fuel grades. Most mfgs program it to run just at the edge of detonation... remember those knock sensors??? they detect knock and retard timing slightly to keep things quiet and keep your piston rings from wearing. It's unrealistic to expect any dealer, regardless of mfg to adjust a car still under warranty out of spec and compromise it's reliability.

Don't mean to sound ****y but it's just the way it is.

2 degrees advanced (17 degrees BTDC) is still within the Nissan spec - my dealership was happy to do it, and Nissan's normal warranty still applies.

I do notice a difference in performance. You have to have a Consult II to make the change. It puts no strain on the engine and will not shorten its life. Make friends with a Nissan/Infiniti tech.

And just when I though I knew everything...

I do still find it hard to believe they will alter the timing specs on a car under warranty.... anyway... Knowing a tech personnaly probably helps a lot. Is this an adjustment they make in the ECU programming or do they reposition a crank and/or cam sensor?

I guess publicly acknowledging your mistakes still won't save you from the flaming of certain "donating members".

Maybe this statement of apology is a little clearer.....

Sorry, I'm a stupid idiot. I made a mistake. See ya.

dont worry about it. everybody screws up once in a while. i am sure i have done my part at one time too. i remember a guy saying his apex filter took off a second off his time. dont know what time he was talking about but at least you knew the timing could be advanced which is more than more than the dealers around me would admit too.

don't worry. it's all good. this forum is for us to share the info and to learn from each other.

BTW just donate $20 and it will say "Donating Member" too. plus it's for a good cause.
