2001 Maxima GXE vs 02 turbo jetta

My friend wants to race me in his auto 02 turbo jetta with a k&n filter and aftermarket muffler with no catback. I have an auto 01 gxe with a magnaflow muffler and catback. Who will win?

Actually I think the 02 1.8t puts down 180. Nonetheless, if he does not have a manual boost controller, or a chip, you should take him.

If its an auto Maxima, it will be a lost race. But a killing if its a 5 speed!

I killed a Vr6 in my 2003 G35 with no problems.

if the jetta is stick and the max is auto, i would put my money on the jetta. i drove my friend's 1.8T a week or two ago. even in auto, it had some hop. if it's auto to auto, i think the max would edge it out.

Why is everyone down on automatics? Man... I've been able to smoke some decent matches with my automatic... just because someone has a stick (1) doesn't mean they know how to use it and (2) isn't an instant qualifier to win a match-up.

Uhh i dont think so, Ive smoked several Vr6 jettas, and 1.8t's (180 hp) with my old car which was a 00 gxe(auto)...

So if this jetta is stock, there is no way in h E l l that the max will lose the race.

correct me if i'm wrong, but don't stick 1.8T jettas run like 15.3-15.5 or something?

Interesting thread because just yesterday I was driving (spiritedly ) on Route 1 South from Princeton. My friend has a 5spd GTI and maybe because I didn't think it was safe to be pushing 100 mph that I let him go.....but it seemed like he was pulling from me.

Why?

Car-stats.com has a listing for a 2001 running a 15.7.

similar thing happened to me when i had 2k miles on my car and i raced a 5 speed modded gti. i was behind him at a light then came around him and was up to his door but this was at about 70 and after that i let off because i realized i was still trying to break in my car. and i was going 3/4 throttle the whole time, but in reality thats basically full throttle due to the lovely throttle by wire.

Part of the problem was that it was a 2 lane road and it was a little twisty so I had to be careful (because my car handles like little red wagon). I've driven his car and it is PLANTED on the road. Don't kid yourself....those cars can move.

jettas, just like maximas, tend to be underestimated. edmunds.com got 15.6 out of a stick jetta. seeing as how they got 14.9 out of a manual maxima, i think low-mid 15's is very possible with a broken in 1.8T stick jetta.

i'll try to track down my friend and ask him about it. this kid i know from college a year ago i THINK told me his stock jetta ran a 15.3. after a chip alone, that time dropped dramatically.

But wasn't 2002 when they went to 180 hp?

This is a 2001 stat.

2002 should be in the low 15's then.

Yes they should. I smoked my wife's old 1.8t, but it had 160HP. That engine is awful until that turbo kicks in. Once it's running, that car is fast, no doubt about it. I also agree with the chip comment. One chip and the A/F ratio is remapped and the boost goes up quite a bit. Not sure of actual numbers, but don't put VW down for anything but build quality. They handle real well, and in general their engines are very nice. That's not to say that clips don't break and moldings don't bubble up and that people won't steal your stupid VW sign off your trunk and I will NEVER buy another one, but they are pretty nice nonetheless.
