how can u tell if your tranny is slipping?
Well its simple, Say your at a stand still. Floor it! if your rpms climb way up and the car isnt moving as fast as it should then its slipping. Note: This is an extreme case of slipping, your tranny is 90+% gone if its doing this. You can actually feel it on part throttle acceleration were you step on the gas and the rpms climp and the car isnt moving at the same pace it used to move at.
I just had warranty work done on the car yesterday to fix slipping of the 2-3 shift. The best way to tell is:
From a stop, apply half-throttle [or more]. Keep pressure on the gas the same and watch your RPMs closely. You should also turn off the radio/cd player so you can hear your engine as well. Again, my car only exhibited the slip between the 2-3 when the car was shifting into third when at or over 2k RPMs. Your car may exhibit the problem at a higher RPM so I would test it more than once.
So when my car was in second gear and shifting into third the RPMs jumped about 1k without any torque. The engine went VROOM but the car didn't push the vehicle or accelerate. Keep in mind this only lasted about a second or so and was only noticeable with a cold engine. After the engine had warmed up this "problem" disappeared.
All I did to get it done under warranty was to call and make an appointment, bring a copy of the TSB (it's in the stickies), and instruct the service writer to let the car sit cold for at least 5 hours before the tech goes on a test drive. If you take the car in early in the AM you'll definitely have it back by the end of the day.
Good luck.
