Dealer will adv my timing, doesn't know how?

My AE is in the shop again today, 5th trip for air bag light. (I'm still not mad about this but I'm approaching my limit.)

They have gladly performed all TSBs without question. Rear air leak, AE shift ****, fuel cut off, brake judder etc... They complete the work on time and have treated me well, air bag light not withstanding.

After the fuel cut off TSB was done the performance went to hail. The reason I bought the blue SOB in the first place was the way it ran. It had personallity. I could gently release the clutch in first gear then press the accellerator to the floor and it would light up the tires. Now it is just a hot dark colored 4 door sedan with a stick.

The service manager said he would be happy to have the timing advanced for me but they don't know how. I mentioned what I've read here about how it's done in the Consult II.

Does anyone here know how to do this? Is the procedure in the Nissan Service Manual or is it in the Consult II Manual? Page number in the manual?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

im not looking for any money but there are a few people that were going to work on a write up. it is truly straight forward if you just plug it up. you go into the setting for timing- same one for idle i believe. i went to a local nissan specific shop that had the consult 2 and they let me and blubyu2k2 use it ourselves. i changed the timing and bumped my idle in 5 minutes and that was the first time ive ever seen one. ask your service guy if he can plug it and the interface is straightforward.

The Service Manager mentioned that Consult II was available from more than one source, Snap-On, Mac, others? May be a difference in features between brands. It sounds like BS to me but I don't think he is BS'n me on purpose, he is the manager as in administration, payroll issues etc...

When I asked Kevin the mechanic about it the last time I was there Kevin told me that it is burned in the ECM as part of the download, nothing can be done. I think Kevin may be full of it. I suspect that it is an unusual request for them but if I were using a Consult II for a living I have to believe that out of curiosity I would have checked out every level of every menu. God this is frustrating. I miss my small block Chevys, just reach in there and give the distributer a nudge.

I'd like to get my timing advanced too? But what exactly does this mod do? Give you more power? How?
(Don't mean to sound like a nooobie)

Thanks,

ive never heard of it available from any other source, there are other diagnostic machines of course but cant change certain settings for nissans. its not burned in anything, its just a setting and can be adjusted. two weeks after i had mine done,i disconnected my battery for 10 hours one night then took it back in and the setting was still at 17 btdc. i could definately feel a bump in low end response but i think im pretty used to it now.

That's what I'm looking for. It used to have excellent low end response, now is so/so.

it is possible as you will from my posts above. no one has dynoed this yet to my knowledge but you can feel a better response in lower rpms. from what ive heard, everything else equal the fuel mileage should increase because the engine is operating more efficiently.

I dunno if it's the same as the 2k2+, but the couple I have done are very straightforward. There are 2 places to view timing settings--only one will allow for you to make changes. On these it's the first menu called "Work Support" and under "Ignition Timing" if I remember correctly.

Dave, I got the windshield wiper controller (GLE/SE) for my 2K GXE. It looks and works great.
BTW, Is there a write-up that you can show us so we can shove it up the dealers around here. My idling is 580-630 rpm. It just keep dropping to 400-500 when i come to stops. And they call that normal.
They said everything is controlled by ECU, no adjustments can be made blah blah blah ...
Thank you,

Which dealer? I lived in Austin for 12 years. I miss Austin! It isn't out of the realm of possibility, not a bad day trip. I'm gussing you are a donating member so my offer may not be that attractive to you. If you are ever in the Dallas area though I'd be happy to treat you to a lap dance or something. He!!, I'm getting desperate, I'm willing to up the offer to the full on $37 .org donation which also works out to two lap dances.

Could you describe how it's done? Not the gory details, just enough to get 'em started. I called North Texas Nissan in Corenth this morning, where I bought the car. They said "no problem, just bring $110.00 with you when you come."

The dealer that has the car today is trying to be nice to me because of the air bag problem. They will do it gratis but... It concerns me too that if they really don't know how, what else might they screw up doing the timing.

If I bring it to your dealership will it be $110 there too?

PM MiniRX7 in the Canadian Forum. He had this done to his 2k2 before he demo'd it on his birthday. Now he has a 2K3 and may or may not have had this done again. As for the 2k-2k1's, I'm not sure but would like to know as well.

DUDE! I can't believe that NTN told you that! Who are you dealing with?? I bought my car there too, and have been taking it there for service. Problem was: I advanced my timing (pulled a favor) before I took the car in for the hesitation TSB. I told those boneheads to "consult me before making any changes." Nope, they just reflash the ECU. Timing advance gone. Get in big arguement with Service Manager, "nope we won't advance it for you like it was before." We go around for like 20 minutes and no dice. Once again I had to pull a favor (friend at Crest.) The car will go back to NTN for free oil changes when they send me coupons, but not for warranty work!

I called the main number and asked for the service department. Someone named Kevin answered. Said he didn't know, would ask someone and call me back. He called back in about 10 minutes and told me $110.

BTW, Bankston Nissan of Lewsville has the car, they are the ones who don't know how to do it. Other than this and the airbag thang they have been excellent. I took out a 2k4/6spd with a salesman for almost an hour a couple of weeks ago. Told him I wasn't in the mood to trade right now. He said no problem, let's go. I drove the hell out of the 2k4. Like I've said, Bankston has been great overall. We just can't get beyond this timing thang. It sure will suck if they do get it done and it doesn't produce the desired results.

Heh it figures! I was initally dealing with him when I took it in, then he left for the day and I got stuck with the old lady Svc Mngr (again). Oh well---I guess it worked out for the better since I got to customize all the ECU settings too when I advanced the timing the second time around!

I wouldn't pay $110 for it BTW---

Can you hook me up with the friend at Crest? I'm willing to pay. I'd rather not have to give up $110 to get it done but if that's what it takes...

I work at South Point Nissan, I watched the tech do my car, it took about 15-20 minutes, it was in a section in the Consult called "target timing". I think our guys charge $44, if you were thinking of coming down, you would probably want to make an appointment-

I imagine he'll take $40 or $50 and be ok with it. (He's not a Nissan guy.)

I was asking if you were a DNE member because we are looking for members. We are having a meet tomorrow night in Dallas at Tigerbull's. Feel free to come hang out and meet some friendly Nissan folks! There's not too many 5th gens, so I'm trying to bring in some more.

MEET Sat 31st

I am a semi old (29) fat married guy. lol TigerBulls is just a burger joint with a big parkinglot next to it. It is a little south of forest and abrams on the west side. There is a huge difference in ages among the group. I just figured that if you want your timing advanced, you might like to BS about cars. If not, it is no sweat.

I'll see what's shakin. In a past life I owned a speed shop and have had various and sundry hot rods over the years. So I've done my share of bench racing and BS'n.

I picked up my car this afternoon. Timing is set to 17 BTDC! No Charge! I think I just nagged, ****ed and moaned enough to wear 'em down. They also replaced an o2 sensor and repaired an ECM connecter. It is so damned hot outside that I can't really tell if anything they did helped. But it is over 100 outside and with the AC on max there is no knock or clatter.

Thanks to all who tried to help. I offered to donate to .org for the right answer. If t56gen3 or DAVEB wants to claim the prize let me know. I emailed the dealer excerpts from both your posts. Don't know if either was used or if they figured it out on their own.

The car was at Bankston in Lewisville. I bought it at NTN but the place burned to the ground two days after I picked it up. As they were out of commission at the time I just took it to Bankston. The rest is history.
