you can it's just more costly because you need pac adapters to adapt 4 ohm equipment to 1 ohm speakers

You can get Polk tweeter and you don't have to do anything to your Bose. It's a simple swap. If you want a new sub you need to get a Pac adapter part #AOEM-NIS2. It plugs behind your Bose head unit and makes it easier to add an amp. After that you have few choises for subs. Most people built custom boxes for their subs. if you want to save trunk space and keep your car looking stock, you can get a 8" free air sub and swap it with stock Bose sub. Or you can get an Infinity Basslink. One of the members has a write up.

I just finished swapping the Bose freeair 8 for an 8 in a custom sealed enclosure. I made the enclosure myself after seeing TimW's thread a couple of weeks ago. I added a Rockford 8 that fits exactly where the stock Bose 8 was and hangs down about 8 inches. Then I bought a Rockford mono sub amp and connected it to the incoming speaker leads from the head unit that plugged into the Bose amp. I also tapped the 12v switched lead at the Bose amp too. The bass sounds so much more level and tight now. The total cost was about $200 (100 for the amp, 40 for the speaker, about 60 for the rest of the cable and other stuff). Running alll of the cable was more of a breeze then what I had thought. My only regret is not making the box more shallow and a bit wider. The new sub hits harder and is more accurate. Granted it won't rattle the mirrors of the car next to you, but it does sound a lot better. After I finish the cleaning everything up (mounting the amp properly) I'll have to post it.
