Even now, I'd still take the M5. Although it's underpowered compared to the competitors listed, it's truly a driver's car (never driven one myself, but I'll take everyone else's word for it). The E55 is fast, no doubt about that, but there are just too many computers in there. It's not always about the top speed...I like driving for the sake of driving, and the M5 would be perfect for that. The E55 will be fast, but you won't have the driver-car connection there.

That being said, the new M5 sounds like it's going to be a complete monster. I guess BMW is set on not including any FI in their cars, which is a good and a bad thing I guess.

If the E55 came in stick, it'd be a much harder choice for me between it and M5.

That's a huge factor when people buy the M5 anyway. At that price there are plenty of good performance vehicles, but I really doubt they handle like the M5...

you're thinking of the S6, which only comes in the Avante (wagon) flavor.

the RS6, new to the US this year, is a sedan...

btw, RS6 is my choice without question.

Wouldn't the Ferrari at 3815 lbs/515 hp have a shot at the Mercedes 4610 lbs/493 hp?

i didnt believe the numbers either, but Car & Driver tested the 1/4 mile of the Ferrari 575M to be at 12.6 seconds and the 1/4 mile of the S600 to be 12.5 seconds. The Ferrari power to weight is 9.35lb per hp and the S600 is at 9.6 lb per hp, which is pretty close. What probably gives the Benz that slight edge is the monster 590 lb/ft of torque availible from freaking 1800 rpm...can u imagine that?? barely above idle producing almost 600 lb/ft, i find that to be absurdly mind-blowing numbers. anyways its pretty gay to be arguing about whats faster by magazine numbers but the chances of seeing a 575M and a S600 at a track are pretty slim.....id pick the S600 just because saying 'twin turbo V-12' almost turns me on

I don't know about that frontend. Looks too Pontiac-ish, but you can't beat those numbers.

For me M5 all the way!

With $$$ being no object it just depends on how much you feel like spending on mods.

It won't be force fed. It will have at least 500HP N/A!! Anyone can supercharge, but it takes real effort to get that sort of HP naturally.

Even though the s600 has a v12 tt, the E55 is still faster in the 1/4. Mercades doesn't exactly want people to know, as it'll cannabalize sales. The S600 weighs like 6000 pounds compared to around 4000 with the E (roughly). All in all, its a pretty hard decision, if I was doing aftermarket mods on the cars, the M5 would probably have more potential, since its NA. I couldn't imagine how friggin fast that car would be turbocharged. Stock for stock, I'd take the E55.

those things are nice and with just a chip you can get more then 500hp and then it will beat every single sedan out there. The M5 handling is amazing, my dad's friend had one and that car is amazing.

the E55 has a supercharger, dont know how reliable they are , since superchargers suck.

Isnt the Jag supercharged too?

basicly, it all comes down to the M5 and the RS6 which comes with 6 speed AUTO and 19" rims. no traction problems because of quattro and you should see the front seats on those things...fuc!ing sick!
they get also full torque at 1950 rpm, can you say 414 torque right there
...I am all over the RS6 too, factory with Recaro racing seats, 19" and AWD... A couple of hundred bucks on a upgrade turbo chip and that car is invincible... Plus the low end torque is my favorite...

I agree. BMW is all about naturally aspirated engines.

I love all of these cars. When the M5 came out, I was amazed. I now see alot of them around town (it seems like everyone traded their 540 for an M5 around here) and when you hear one of these guys pull out and punch it, it gives me the shivers. Now the Audi and the E55 seem even more impressive (although I think the M5 still has the best handling dynamics). When I saw a test of the new E55, it blew me away. Now the S600. Faster than all the exotics were a couple of years ago and the thing is a big boat.

Did anyone see the CL65 in this month's Car and Driver. It is the big CL coupe with the same motor as the S600 but with higher boost, producing 604 hp and sub 4 sec 0-60.

We will look back on this period as the golden age of cars.

Now if I could only win that damn lottery.

Yeah...they are what I call "supernatural"...

I'm lucky to be part of that heritage. My brother and I built (well OK, paid for) one of the fastest SLK 230's to exist (it's actually bored/stroked to 2.5L). While he was on deployment last year we took it to Florida and let RENNTech have it's way with it. He paid for the car (it's a '99 model), and I gave them a signed blank check with the words "do your worst" in the memo section. He's actually going to sell the car to a member of the Baltimore Ravens now. I wouldn't mind building up the SLK 320 myself. It has tons more potential...

The Audi R6.

Read the June (or was it May ?) Car & Driver sports sedan comaprison test. It was the first time the Audi beat both the BMW/M5 and the AMG.

I wish I could contribute with a judgement of my own but I have had no chance to drive these cars on my own. I wish I could. I do trust Car & Driver though.

Amazing the M5 hangs with no turbo or supercharger or 4wd or electronic brakes etc etc. It;s so pure. The Jag is for status, not to keep up with the other 3. The E55 acceleration and interior are awesome. The Audi is amazing as well.

Why can't Nissan/Toyota show em how it's done? A GS 430 TT manual.. Sigh....

It's still gotta be the M5, because that's the only one on the list with a manual transmission. I know the autos are getting better, and I know they all have a manu-matic option, but I want to be able to control the engine RPM at the point the clutch engages.

RS6 is awesome, but you can't do a smoky burnout with all wheel drive and no clutch!
