LOS ANGELES (AP) - A high-speed crash involving a driver who had just seen the street-racing movie "2 Fast 2 Furious" left a 78-year-old motorist dead, police said.
Vahan V. Shahenian, 23, of Granada Hills was traveling nearly 100 mph on a residential street Sunday when his 2002 Nissan Altima broadsided a car driven by Keiji Iko, who died instantly, police said.
Authorities do not believe Shahenian was racing another vehicle at the time.
"This is '2 Fast 2 Furious' right here in the Valley," police Detective Kathleen Burns said.
Authorities are looking to find new ways to crack down on street racing. The sequel to "The Fast and the Furious" was expected to trigger an increase in dangerous high-speed driving.
Police deployed extra officers around some movie theaters before last week's opening of "2 Fast 2 Furious." Police arrested several people in North Hollywood and elsewhere, Capt. Greg Meyer said.
The Los Angeles City Council on Friday passed a measure permitting police to permanently confiscate and sell cars used in street races. It has yet to be signed into law by Mayor James Hahn.
Iko, a retired engineer, was turning left in his 1993 Toyota Camry when the crash occurred, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene and Shahenian was taken to a nearby hospital with a broken arm. A passenger in his car was treated for internal injuries.
Shahenian claimed he was driving the speed limit, investigators said.

That kid is such a DUMP A$S! If you can't keep whats reality and whats a movie seperated you should not be allow to drive.
I know people will have their blood pumping after watching 2Fast2Furious, I know I did so right after the movie I went to play some racing video games in the halls of the theater to vent out some steam~~ then i drive home feeling much more calm......It cost 50cents and I got he best of both world, drive home safe and let some Racing steam out of my body.
Ofcourse I still do see people driving crazy with their cars after the movie out of the parking lot,

No, this story has too many loopholes in it.
First of all, the car turned left onto the street, meaning the accident was that old persons fault anyways. And how exactly do they know that he was traveling over 100mph, by the treads left on the ground when he was breaking? Highly doubt it, just got done with physics courses and the chance of him being able to react to a car pulling out in front of him is very small.
Never once in the movie does anyone drive 100mph by themselves in a residential area, they are just blaming it on the movie because it is out, same way they blame the media for everything else other people do.

I dont know what to say, the kid is just a complete idiot, I mean sure I have done some stupid things looking back at it(everyone has), and I have been fortunate not to get into any accidents yet, but thats just un-excusable to be going that fast. And it really sucks to live to be so old just to go out like that....
As for F&F, I never saw the first one, and dont plan on seeing the second one, it just looks totaly stupid to me, and only makes crappy riced out street racing even more popular. Its just like a call for dumb kids to rice out their cars and race each others. If you want a cool racing movie with some boss cars, check out American Graffitti or 2 Lane Blacktop.

I honestly hate street racing. I hate it because there are so many people who "think" they have skills but don't. Seriously. I worked with Dragnet... the SDPD squad against drag racing... and I have never seen so many pictures in my life of people who died in illegal drag racing. Its so gruesome... top epidermas burned so that the fat is exposed... torsos and limbs thrown every where... sometimes fifty feet away from the site... feet in trees... missing hands... whatever. Its gross. I would rather be shot and take two in the chest then get into a car accident because of drag racing. And its always the bystanders, passengers, and spectators who get the brute force of it. Car safety was meant for the driver to walk away... not the person you hit... and thats the truth.

1. If he had been going the posted speed limit he WOULD have had time to react... hence SPEED LIMITS!!
2. The old guy was taking a left with what appeared to be ample time to make his turn... no reasonable person would expect someone to be going 100mph on a 30/35mph road. It is NOT the old guy's fault.
3. Accident reconstruction... I'm glad you "just got done with" a physics course but that doesn't make you an expert (thank god). Do you think an altima hitting a camry at 30 makes the same dent as one hitting at 100mph? They'll know to within about 5mph how fast the altima was going just by inspecting skid marks, the camry, the crumple zones in the altima, and by looking at how far the altima pushed the camry after hitting it.

Don't get me wrong.. I'm all for placing the blame squarely on the kid because he did something illegal, but the old guy is WAYYYY down on the list after the kid, his friend for not stopping him, the movie, producer, director, actors, etc.
Watch, they'll get the friend to tell-all by saying he'll go to jail for 10 years if he doesn't, and we'll find out the kid left the movie and said "I bet I can drive like that" about 2 minutes before murdering that old man.

2k2wannabe made all of the points I was going to; I'll add just one addition.
Picture this scenario - you're driving down the street, look ahead and see a car 80 lengths away from the intersection. Should be enough time to clear the intersection, because he's presumably going somewhere near the speed limit. Now here's the difference:
Both cars at 35 mph (70 mph closing speed), oncoming car 80 lengths away - 10.09 seconds to collision (plenty of time to clear the intersection, especially if you're already rolling).
One car at 35, other car at 100 (135 mph closing speed). Now you have 5.25 seconds - half the time you reasonably expected. Bam...
