Lots of dealers will let you take a car home for the day and soometimes the night as long as they have your information.

When I was test driving cars b4 I bought my Max I was looking at Xterra's and the sales guy let me and my gal take one out without giving him any info whatsoever, nothing. I told him we were going to lunch, and he said "take your time" We came back after two hours.

Not true

I used to work for Hertz actually, and know that maintenance was never "forgotten" (maybe postponed for a bit) for any of our cars, from the Excursion and Town Cars down to cheap Escorts. The car is entered into the computer upon arrival (model, miles, color, etc) and then after is tracked every time it goes out on a rental, when it comes back, and when they do have maintenance, that is logged also so that is all on record. They were actually pretty good actually about getting the oil changed as close to ever 3k as possible. If the customer made any kind of complaint about the car as far as powertrain, drivetrain, or what have ya, the car was taken to a dealership and checked out for that problem. As far as general stock rental cars go, ours were kept pretty nice and were always thoroughly cleaned/washed after coming back from a rental. Maintenance was routinely done and were just in general taken pretty good care of. Just thought I'd report what I was around. I know that some of you others have seen differently, but this was a local-owned Hertz in a semi-small town (no airports) and I never saw anything that was outright trashed.

I think you underestimate the average person who rent's cars. I can't think of a single guy out there who WOULDN'T screw around in a rented Maxima (unless the girlfriend or wife is in the car)

Rentals get beat to hell and neglected, not just by the customer, but also the rental places who routinely forget to change oil, use cheap gas etc.... Those types of things will bite you in the a$$ down the road when the warranty's is expired

sounds cool taking the car for a day. They don't really let us do that around here.... maybe they do... I just haven't heard of it. The only dealers I've heard anythink like that was GM dealers. They started advertising the 24hr test drive. I did take my Maxima on a nice test drive without the salesman, longer than most but he had all info.

If you are under 25, you need special "underage insurance" which basically triples your rental payment per day....

Another reason why NY is such a GREAT state...
I am 20 and I rented a car in Newburgh three weeks ago from National/Alamo

i can attest to that as well. last fall, before i decided i wanted to get a maxima, i was looking at the accord coupes, and a dealership here let me drive the car off the lot without signing a thing, or givng them anything.

Wrong. I worked in the rental car industry for 6 years. You just don't know what you are getting and if you are buying a previous rental from an auto dealership (not a rental outlet run by the agency that actually owned the car) you are REALLY taking your chances as this car probably went through an auction-so you have no idea which company owned it. Rental agency policies on things like maintenance vary from company to company and can be spotty with some companies.

Not to mention the abuse rental cars take. I had a customer call me up one day complaining that the airbag deployed on the car he rented from me while he was driving down the road. I told him to bring it in and we would take a look at it and give him another car. When it came in I took a look at the car and sure enough, the airbag had deployed. As I was walking back to the office (I was the manager at this location) I noticed a puddle of transmission fluid trickling out from underneath the car. After I pointed this out the guy admitted he had driven over a dip a little too fast. He must have really been flying to bottom out the front end and tear a hole in the transmission pan. The force of the impact also blew the airbag and probably blew out the shocks. Needless to say, he did NOT get another car from me but I'm sure that very car was sold through an auction a year or so later and wound up on a dealership used car lot.

This is just one story of many I could tell you.

I would NEVER even consider a previous rental.
He is telling the truth. My Girlfriend bought a car that was also a fleet car which came from auction, and it has been nothing but trouble, there have been some major problems with it and tring to sell it has also been trouble. Every person always asks the question of where she got it and if she knew what type of fleet car it was. I would wait it out a little while longer and try to find a better deal somewhere else.

SO... moral to all of these posts (in a nutshell):

1. Some rental companies suck
2. Some run a good business
3. Some rental co. employees suck
4. Some do not
5. Buying a rental is like rolling the dice, do what homework you can.
6. Good luck.

Also, Maximas aren't exactly cheap to rent. Most people on this board are probably MUCH harder on their cars than the average renter. The average person who rents a Maxima is probably a business-person -- not the likely type to beat on a rental. Even if you do find a cherry used Max owned by a grandma, what are the chances that her grandkids didn't take the car out for a few joyrides? Plus, rental car companies take excellent care of their cars -- often doing maintenance at shorter intervals than many owners do. If you're concerned, you should have the car checked out by an independent mechanic -- plan to pay between $60-$100 for a pre-purchase inspection. My Max was a formal rental. It's probably been the best car I've ever owned -- and I've had a lot of different cars. Diatribe over ...
I agree

my 2000 GXE was a rental. no problems so far...knock on wood!

i got it in mid 2002 with 34k miles. but, i got it from a CarMax (which is where my wife works)...and i knew they had throughly checked it out for major problems. if you trust the dealership...it might not be that big of a deal.

who knows what the history of all those used cars out there are. most people are clueless as to who their car used to belong to. there are probably alot of people out there with cars that used to be rentals and they don't even know it!

just make sure you know what you are getting.

I Couldn't have said it any better! Plus rentals are on scheduled maintenance as per the Mfg. of the car. Thats how they keep the warranty valid.

Rental/Fleet vehicles baught from larger companys are usually very well maintained by the dealer. They are not subject to Jiffy Lube oil changes. Even my company cars all go back to the dealer for anything thats needed. We specify that in our company policy to every employee that has a company provided car.

BTW - Our company cars are BMW's I work for a German owned Corporation. We put the cars up for purchase to the employees at the end of the lease term. I'm still waiting for somebody to lease an M3
