toppin' out at 130?
I have a 2000 5spd maxima with a CAI & a cattman y-pipe. I was on the freeway the other day and tried to see how fast I could get it up to. To my dissapointment, when I reached 130mph at about 5.3k rpm the clutch popped out of 5th gear. It does it every time too. Any suggestions on what the problem could be???? Because I know this car could definitely reach 140-145 redlining.

what do you mean the clutch pops out?
its either governed at 130mph or you got a problem with the clutch. i took mine all the way to 136mph where the governer kicked in, and it felt like i was hitting the rev limiter when it happened

wierd, I've never really heard of that happening with the transmission. Sometimes I would have problems like that with the Durango's Transfer case, but It was because it wouldnt be completely engaged and would pop out with a certian ammount of pressure. Now I just take the extra 1/10th of a second to make sure its in and I dont have a problem.
I cant see why it would pop out of gear, have you tried to hold it in gear?

yah dealers seemed to be only concerned about things that happen at legal speeds....
my mechanic once told me that he had a guy come to him saying his 600SL would handle weird somewhere over 125. Turns out it was snow in the wheels or something. Mechanic took it to speed to see. Said normally he wouldnt but it was a good paying customer.

Actually, I've heard of something like this before....
However, it's on SE-R's. Basically, people who always leave their hand on the shifter would eventually fatigue some part in the shifter/transmission, which would cause 5th gear pop out. You can find lots of info on this by searching.
I have no idea if that's possible on the Max, but why only 130.xx, I don't know.
Just thought I'd throw that in there, since it's not impossible that it's happening.

PLEASE do. However, you'll hit the rev-limiter BEFORE you see what a VQ30DEK-T can really do. We need an autoTRAGIC with it's tall gearing for that probably.

Don put a 12.2 on Kevs car? Shiet.......
Well I had mine upto 140 on the speedo last sunday when I was testing/tuning with my OBDII, I went past 3rd to see what the reading would show. Ive been pounding the car lately and still holding fairly well. Its still holding up pretty well. No issues.

What did the OBD-II say your MAX rpm was? I know that a stock SE is supposedly drag limited around 140ish, but with the extra HP you should be able to run 150+mph depending on your RPM with the auto gearing. I hit 143+mph, but it took FOOOOOREVER from 125-140mph.
Turbo VQ's don't have that problem.

Well the Harrison OBDII data logging is somewhat "crap" if I put it in my own words because when I hit redline from 3500-6500 in 2nd gear it logged 3700 and then nothing more above it besides 2800. It has like a 2sec delay or something between the times it logs. I didnt see what the RPMs shows on the OBDII since I was watching the road. To hard to look at a 15" laptop that has a 1600x1200 res on it. But I know the RPMs are off. The needle shows damn near 6750 or so but the true rpm is like 6500.

Anyways, yeah the tach is LAAAAAZY as hell, especially in 1st/2nd. It just can't keep up. However, the speedometer is fast by ~3mph at 60, so you know Nissan is up to something.

Has Ferhan not topped off over 170mph in his 4th gen auto
its a 4th gen, but the gears are still the same are they not. I think he still had a little more to give but
Ill have to run a simulation to see what mph it will topp off at...
Edit: well so far I know at 6600rpms in 4th gear the auto is at 186.2mph considering the wheel diameter is still 25.9" and just a side note, It took 1800hp on the sim to make the car hit that mph in a 1/4mile ET.
btw the ET was 7.33
