At 60 mph

I drive a 2k3 auto..Now lets say I want to race from a roll from 60 mph, should I go from D to 3 or just leave it on D and floor it?

you could drop it into 2nd at 60. 2nd gear is good to around 80 i think 3rd wont pull very hard

You don't have enough room to drop to 2nd. Leave it at 3 - that's the best gear to be in when pulling hard at highway speeds.

if you drop it in "3" on the highway at 60mph and you floor it, it will still automatically drop into 2nd gear.

Reaction time for the tranny is just better if you leave it in 3rd, at least from my experience. Putting in in D takes too long for it to u/l the TC, drop to 3rd then to 2nd if needed.

But that's just me

Question?

What is the MAX mph you can get the tranny to downshift into second at?

for 2k-2k1's, automatically 64mph; manually 70mph

Heres a kicker....1st gear last until 47mph, BUT it doesn't downshift to 1st gear after 29mph
manually its 39mph

2K2 should be the same, since it's the same tranny, right?

I wonder if a Valve Body would affect that.

I don't know about you guys, but I usually either floor it at 60, car shifts into second or third, and consistantly pulls...When i shift into 3 third manually, the car pulls, but not quite as good as flooring it...

Am I driving "good enough" from a roll? Should I floor it, shift to third and then D...The car seems to drive itself better when I floor it though....

Sounds like the computer is shifting from 4th-to-2nd, while you're only manually shifting from 4th-to-3rd. Your tach will tell you which gear you are in.

Try dropping to 2nd manually and it will be the same, since according to ScreamingVQ you can manually shift to 2nd below 70mph. The ADVANTAGE of manually shifting vs. letting the computer do it(ie just flooring it), is that you can drop to 2nd gear from 70mph vs. 64mph, which will give you more RPM and thus pull.

I think 2k2-2k3's have the same shift points as the 4th gen's, so they will downshift themselves into the lowest gear possible at 65mph. The computer itself won't allow a downshift that will allow the engine to spin higher than 6,000rpms.

What I don't understand is why 2k-2k1's get jipped and similar year I30's get redline shift points I'm wondering if the TCM's between the two are different and if someone needs a new TCM, they might as well step into an infiniti dealer and get an I30 TCM.

Hmmmmmmmnn...that could be VERY very interesting to see. DAVEB could find out if the part numbers are the same.

Someone should DEFINITELY look into that.

What is the MAX mph you can downshift to 2nd at? Is it different by flooring it vs. manually?

in drive it won't go into 2nd past 65mph I believe. Now with me driving I will slam it into 2nd at 70

Ok...DAVEB did a little digging and called one of his Infiniti buds. Anyways, it seems the 2K-2K1 trans ECU has a different part number, but the 2K2+ and I30 might be the same. In other words, they probably used the I30 trans computer for the 4spd 2K2+ Maxima.

The 2K-2K1 autoTRAGIC trans has more updates and revised newer parts then you could count. Supposedly, they kept improving it and every time they would release a new part that would be the replacement if the old came in for repair. Now considering the I30's are usually built/released later then the Maxima, they most likely used the latest "improved" parts. Then when the 2K2+ Maximas came out, they most likely used the same improved computer and that's why the part numbers look similar.

Anyways, DAVEB doesn't know for sure, but he feels confident the I30 trans ECU will plug-n-play into a 2K-2K1 so if there is someone out there with a buddy that has an I30, maybe you could try swapping and see what happens to your shift.

Does your car shift at redline? ScreamingVQ says the I30's do, which on a 2K-2K1 means more power.

I'm pretty sure if you manually shift, you're only able to get it to shift at 6000-6200ish?

I'm wondering if the TCM on a 99 Maxima will work also? It has the similar if not the same ECU software as a 2k-2k1 Maxima. I should try to find a 4th gen in the junk yard and yank out the TCM to see if it is a plug-n-play

Or just find an I30, 2K2-2K3 TCM.

If you manually shift the auto, you can take it will up to 6600rpms. If you take it too high the 1-2 shift takes a bit longer but usually it slams into 2nd on mine with enough force to shake the whole dash board. From a 25mph jump the auto can hold its own as well as a 50mph jump, but once you pass 80 and go into 3rd it takes a yr be4 you go anywere
Hell with my old slicks (craptenzas) the tires used to make a nice bark when I manually downshifted to 1st when goin apprx 25-30 but now the Yokos dont let that happen
