Scraping sound that stops with brake application.

I have a question:
What does it mean when I hear a continuous scraping
sound that dissapears when I apply the brakes?
The sound is NOT a squeal, but more of a light
scratchy sound.
It is not too loud, but audible with the windows
cracked and radio off.

Has anyone had this happen on your Maxima?
I have a 2002 Maxima SE with only 6000 miles on it,
so I don't think it's the break pads wearing out.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I would normally attribute that to worn brake pads... if not I don't know.

a caliper might have frozen and worn the pad down... you really need to get it checked.

Might be an E brake problem. Do you smell the brakes burning after driving around?

does this only happen when you first drive the car. this is just the noise they make until they warm up. if it's continuous, even after a while of braking, then i'd have a dealer look at it. don't jump into too many conclusions. mine do that in the morning, then after a few minutes, it stops. the pads warm up and everything is perfectly fine.

Same here, I have a 01 SE and I hear that scratch noise whenever the car has sat for a while, shortly after driving the noise is gone. I had my service center check it at 25000, brakes are fine. Can't say the same for the crappy Potenza tires though.

hate to break it to all of you but that noise is normal when brakes haven't warmed up yet. from my very first car to this one, the brakes make a "grinding" type of noise when cool and then as they warm up, the noise disappears.
