Helical slip ??s

Looking for help here; just bought a '02 Maxima SE, 6-speed, loaded with every possible option, and all of the options are listed on the sticker. One thing that's not on there is whether it is equipped with the helical slip differential. I'm hoping it is, and based on what I've read in literature about options, it probably should be. I asked a tech at the Nissan dealership if he could tell by looking, and he couldn't.

Does anyone know a way to tell, other than waiting until the first time it snows?

Thanks.

Other than some subjective 'tests', one way is if you can find the build date of the car. Early ones did not have it, period. Later ones did have the option available. If you have an early build car, further time spent on this would be a waste for you.

By "subjective tests," I would assume you mean the kind you achieve by popping the clutch and looking at the marks on the pavement? That's pretty much what the Nissan tech suggested.

At first it wasn't an option. I don't have it either, neither of us have HLSD, unless it was implicitly stated on the sticker. Not a big deal : ] You can't launch it the same, but we didn't buy race cars anyways... Enjoy the car.

Excellent point. I love the car as is, and it's got all the power I want, and more. I was just interested in it from the standpoint of traction in the winter.

I guess I'll just have to be satisfied with the LSD on my Pathfinder.

HLSD 6spds came with these pedals:

do yours look like that? if they do then you probably have HLSD. (unless they were aftermarket add-ons, which is possible)

also, it is not 100% true to say that your car does not have HLSD just because it isnt on the sticker. i recall an org member saying that when he bought his 02 6spd new it was not on the sticker but the car did in fact have it. this most likely isnt the case for you but it is possible.

When it rains you should be able to find out pretty easily; ESPECIALLY if you still have the OEM Bridgestones.

Who needs rain with RE-92's??? Crap, a mosquito ****ing on the ground is more than enough moisture for those things to get hairy!!

You should be able to jack up the front of the car to the point where both front wheels are above the ground. Then spin one wheel. If the other wheel turns in the same direction, you have lsd. If it turns in the opposite direction, you have the open diff(non lsd).

And lsd is for more than just winter. Nissan went with the helical version to combat the torque steer that comes up with higher hp fwd cars.

I seem to remember someone from .ORG that if you look inside your engine compartment there's a metal identification plate on the firewall that lists the engine type and transmission. I think that if the ID letters/numbers for the transmission ends in an "H" then you have the HLSD. Anyone know for sure?

Yes, those are my pedals. But as I noted earlier, the previous owner also included with the car stock pedals, which leads me to believe he after-marketed the drilled titanium pedals. They are Nissan equipment, but I'll hav e to check the sticker to see if they came with the car.

The car does have Meridian edition, but not sure if that includes the drilled pedals.

If the $399 option charge is not on your window sticker, you DON'T have it. I have seen many stickers where it was always listed.

Mine was one of the first in country and came without HLSD on the sticker. Nissan sent me an updated sticker. No H in my Vin.

I stated this. The metel plate under the hood lists the engine and tranny codes. The engine code will read VQ35(DE). A non HLSD tranny will read RS6F51A. A HLSD equiped tranny code will be RS6F51H .

Jeff: That trick does not work on the helical setup. Both wheels are not locked into each other if no torque is applied to the ring gear.
