Why is there static? Important!!!

I don't know why I get static every time I get out of my 2003 maxima. Does anyone else get static? What can I do about this?

Cars are made out of lots of plastic, plastic is an insulator and collects charge on the surface which is just waiting to use YOU as a ground.

Anyways, certain weather makes it worse along with some fabric in clothes.

Hehe, I used to get static shocked 3-4x a day but it's gone away just recently. Must be the warmer weather.

I personally haven't had a problem. I know some time back Honda's had a major problem with this. And, do you know where the problem was coming from? The tires. Solution was adding a silicone beed to the inside of the tire. Although I'm not sure if this is your problem though. *Note* make sure you ground yourself before pumping gas.

When I first got the car (4.26.03) I also wondered the same thing.

Everytime I'd get out of the car after driving I'd get shocked when I closed the door.

Recently, however, it's gone away...don't remember the last time my Maxima tried to shock me.

I get shocked 2-3x a day while closing the driver's side door. Always in the morning. I'm in Texas if that matters.

I think it took about a year to completely go away on my 2K.

Also own 03SE and experienced static electric discharge each time I touched the driver's door to close it.

This never happens when the weather is humid or wet.

To avoid, open door and get out without touching metal part of door. Hold your key so you touch the metal shank and then place tip of key against metal (paint no problem) part of door to discharhe without discomfort.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem w/static shock. Your only solution, which will enhance the look of your interior too, is to upgrade your seats w/good quality leathers.

I get shocked in dry weather(low humididty), it's not a little one either. In the nighttime it looks like a spark plug discharge. I even tried letting my girlfriend exit the car first and she didn't get zapped, I did.

Re: Why is there static? Important!!!

I get it a lot, especially during winter. My Civic used to do it to me a lot more than that.

Just make sure you ground yourself by touching any metal part of the car before you pump gas. Believe it or not, that little static discharge against the metal nozzle of the gas pump can cause the gasoline to ignite. Scary.

And the fact that when I get out of my car people would probably tell me I have something hanging off the bottom of my car...
