Paint chipping

Was there ever a TSB issued on the 2K+ paint problem - chips, scratches - especially at the front bumper and edge of hood? I have the super black and, oh yeah, it really shows now with 35K on the odo, driven on normal fwys and local streets. Unacceptable!

Thanks.

Happened to me (and almost everybody else as well). My chips got so bad that two of them were about as big as 50 cent pieces. I talked w/ my dealership about filing a claim w/ Nissan. They filed it, Nissan declined it. The dealership had it repainted under their "good will" money that they get from Nissan.

Now, I'm guessing that since I've been a loyal customer (2 maximas and an altima in 18 months) and the fact that two of the chips were ridiculously huge helped sway them to repaint it for me when Nissan declined it.

There are many, many threads on this, including advice on how to get them repainted at no charge. If you search (in the new test forum) you'll find them.

there is also a class action lawsuit currently ongoing (no idea what is going on as I type this)

I have noticed that the black paint is especially prone to this due to the "thinness" of the paint...I've noticed just by looking at different angles of a couple black 5th gens and my Sterling Mist 2k3, that the sterling mist seems to be thicker paint.

I am used to those paint chips now, coz i got over 30 paint chips on my front and rear bumper. You will get used to it one day, coz even you repaint it, it comes back to hunt your bumpers.

Last week I resorted to getting the black wax with that funky lipstick looking paint chip cover-up junk. I was skeptical, but to be honest, once done I was pretty impressed, it made most of the chips dissapear even when looking up close. Granted, applying this stuff onto the car will become a bi-weekly occurance, but so far it has been doing a decent job at masking those chips.

I'm getting the front bumper, hood, and fenders repainted next week for $1100. Then I will put on the clear bra to keep the chips away.

Turtle Wax ColorCure. My car is gray lusture, so black was the closest color to it. The wax has been on close to two weeks now and it's still holding up well.

My dealer uses that Turtle Wax ColorCure on my Majestic Blue Max, it works well but does wear after about a month. The dealer told me that the Sentra is now having a problem with peeling bumpers, I said shocking. Nissan should at least offer a discount to get the car painted, my fenders are starting to chip right behind the headlights. The next car will be a light color. Chris

MAximas are great cars... i just hate the paint they use. I have 6000 on my 2k3 Sheer Silver and I have chips in the front, and "stupid brother who cant back up" chips on the back bumper. I have noticed its paint is really sucky. Im taking .org members advice in buying turtle wax colorcure. I found out that a 3m clear bra costs 600 for the whole front with installation in boston... ouch....

I also used the black on my grey lustre, then washed with Dawn a few weeks later, then Zainoed over the top. The dye seems to stay in the chips and the Zaino is protecting the dye. I am sure I'll have to re-do a couple times per year, but I showed my body guy and he was stunned. Not perfect but a whole lot better than it was.

You used Dawn dishwashing liquid. That stuff strips the wax, bad idea.

After having the hood and bumper repainted, I put the clear bra on the hood only. The bumper will probably get the most hits, but chips on the hood are much more noticeable (and it's $165 >>>EDIT: INSTALLED<<< instead of $600).

Sorry it took me so long to get back - didn't have access to my computer over the weekend. Stripping the old wax is the whole idea. You need to strip the old stuff so the Zaino will bond to the surface. Check out their website. This was my first time with Zaino, am very happy so far.
