Where is the best place to mount the radar detector in a 2000 Max? I just got the bel 980. Ideally, I don't want it to block my view. I thought it would be ok to put it on the elevated dash area over the clock, but that seems to be an area obstructed by the windshield wipers. The dash area on the driver's far left side near the VIN number is clear of the wipers. Has anybody placed it on the dash there? That area, however, may not allow the rear facing sensor a clear view. I tried the visor mount on both sides but this also seems to block the rear facing sensor and also forces me to take my eyes off the road (while speeding!). I mounted it on the windshield just above the clock and it seems OK there. I did a search in this forum on this general topic and some suggested placing it as high on the windshiled as possible (but below the tint). The problem with putting it there is that then there is a cord dangling down which also seems distracting. Also when I drove with the device mounted on the windshield it was bouncing around when I was drivng fast. Does this affect the performance? I will tightned the screw on the windshield mount to see if it bounces around less.
Those of you who have this or a similar model, isn't it strange that the speaker is on the right side of the unit where it faces the passenger. It would have made more sense to direct the sound towards the driver's side.

I have a Bel 870 and have it mounted exactly where you do: Above the clock, high enough to clear the wipers. It seems to work just fine. Has saved my a$$ at least a few times since I got it in November.

Yes, it bounces around and rattles like a SOB. But the way I see it, those rattles cover up all the other ones 5th gen owners are always complaining about.

If the speaker isn’t loud enough, you should be able to turn up the vol.- see your owner’s manual. Also, if you want to turn off that annoying voice (assuming you have it too) you can also do that.

I’m sure it’ll work well for you. My $99 one has been great.

Buy the hardwire kit, and put it directly under your rearview mirror and run the wire up under the headliner, and down the pillar to the fuse box.
