k&n air filter
k&n air filter
anybody here have a k&n air filter? I do, and suddenly my engine light came on. The dealer diagnosed it and said the filter caused the MAF to get messed up.
I was wondering if anybody had a problem with the MAF, or if you have any suggestions for me
I have a 2002 I35 (I was wondering if you maxima guys could help me out)

I have have a K&N filter and I have hade no problems, but the Dealer keeps telling me to remove it as they say it has been known to cause problems, But I just think it gives them something to blame a problem on so I have not removed it,
I have used K&N's for the past 10 years and having one in the Maxima is the only time I have ever had an issue. So in my mind there has got to be something about the way the Max is sucking in air that makes it different.
Anyway I am very happy with my car without the K&N

yeah, i have warranty, i'm going to go buy a stock filter. But i was wondering if this was a common problem or anything. I was reading another forum, and a guy said that he heard that the car has MAF problems. I don't know if he was referring to his car only, or the whole series of car
k & n air filter
I was abt to install the K & N air filter when my neighbor hit a problem with his Ford truck after 4000 miles. Dealer says that it causes the MAF sensor to fail.
My neighbor spoke to the K & N folks & it seems that sometimes the K & N filter might make Nissan cars a bit flaky.
Now I dunno if I should install it or not since I see that u have a problem too.

I don't clean and re-use though. When it's dirty I buy a new one.
I am not afraid of going to the dealer if the MAF gets knocked out (I spoke with them & they are cool with it).
But I don't have time to spare to bring the car to the dealer for repairs & if they don't stock the MAF sensor, I will be screwed for a few days.
I would hate that.

It makes me wonder why there are some people having problems while others do not have the problems. Is it because of the way we install it ? Or there are some difference in the air filter ?
The part number I have gotten is 33-2031-2 according to K & N. And it comes with 2 foam gaskets. And the instructions stress the procedure must be followed strictly to ensure the air filter fits & seals properly.
I notice the one sold by Nissan dealer at Texas (courtesyparts) is 33-2031-1 . Maybe it is the older version (ver 1).

any comments from those with the problem & those without the problem ? I think my neighbor mentioned that his factory preoiled K & N filter looks more oily than mine. So it might be an isolated case ?

Did anyone disconnect the (-) terminal of the battery for a few minutes ?

I think it's more of a random MAF failure rate than anything else. Our MAFs are *****y and can fail if you look at them funny. Obviously if you over-oil a K&N filter it can get oil on the MAF and hurt it but that would be your own fault. Stock or lightly re-oiled K&N filters shouldn't hurt anything. If I remember right the instructions that came with the filter from K&N mentioned that it was safe for the MAF and that everytime somebody blamed K&N for the problem they researched it and found it was caused by something else... (or something similar to that.)
Anyway, I've had mine on about 10k miles with no problems.

I've had a K&N panel filter in for about 3-4k mi so far, no apparant problems yet. Although my engine's feeling a tad weak on the low-end, but I'm not sure if that's a MAF problem, a small hissing noise I've heard (vacuum leak?), a soon-to-fail ignition coil, dirty spark plugs (considering pulling them all & clean/regapping them, not to mention cleaning the ignition coils), or something else.
I'm going to take mine into the dealer regarding the hissing noise, but I think I should buy a Nissan OEM air filter to pop in before I bring it in. Just so they can't ***** about the K&N

Thanks for the replies folks. U guys are giving me more confidence in the K&N filter. I read a lot abt the k&n air filters & I seem to get a lot of negative comments abt it.
spirilis,
Yup, u should. In case your dealer blames it on the filter.

I have a spare filter in case anything happens to my ride, but I put in a K&N on Saturday, if all goes well I'll GAB it in the future. I really do feel like it makes a difference, maybe it's cause I had the factory one in for 26k miles
but I do feel a difference and no lights kicked yet
