I finally called the dealership and set an appointment to have my transmission checked. I haven't mentioned the most recent service bulletin yet, which I have thanks to the folks here. I just told him that I have been noticing some slipping between first to second. I asked if he had ever heard of anyone having a problem like that with the 2000 max. He said "NO, never." Now I'm worried. I got a bad vibe over the phone. I'm worried that if the trans does not slip when he drives my car, that he will not offer to replace the TCM.

I need some advise.

Should I show him the service bulletin first thing, since he has already played dumb with me? What if he does not offer to replace the TCM after I show him the service bulletin? Is there a way to absolutely verify that my car has a defective part, so that there is no room for doubt even if my trans does not slip when he drives the car? Thanx.

My best luck for reproducing the slip came with heavy throttle up a hill. Try to get good at reproducing it and then if he can't repro, have him go on a drive with you. If that doesn't work... you might be able to get him to check your transmission oil pan for metal shavings and you may end up with a new transmission like me.

Good luck... and if all else fails.. try another dealer.

TCM.......

Just had mine done. My tranny slipped in every gear, mostly 2nd to 3rd. More often when it was cold. The dealer said they had a few, but I got the impression they are completely aware of the problem. I am sure they will not give you a hard time.

Remember... the TCM isn't the only answer anymore... you might have faulty solenoids. If the slippage continues take it back.

The solenoid replacement stopped all my slippage problems.
And the dealer turned the front rotors per the tsb concerning over tightened rotors. The dealer found no metal shaving in the trans.

TCM

I took my to a dealership already and I also showned them the paper. 2 hrs later, they called me and told me that there is nothing wrong with my transmission. It delays becasue I changed my tires to 18". Nissan sux.

What??? The transmission shifts funny because you have 18" tires? That is perhaps the most f'd up response I have ever heard. Take it to another dealer. Those guys obviously have no clue about anything.

That's pitiful. That really sucks. Any other dealers nearby?

Took me 5 times to get them to find a problem... then they ended up haveing to replace my whole tranny. Have you tried dealing with the service manager? I mean the TSB even has a list of affected VINs.

Changing Tires And Rims

I don't know about Nissan but on GM vehicles when you change tire size, rims or gears and are not close to factory it will change the characteristics of your transmission. It thinks the car is actually going faster or slower than actual because of the change and will change the timing on the gear changes set by factoy. That is why most GM owners when changing tire or gears will buy a Hypertech tuner to adjust the change and get the transmission back in tune with the changes made. This mainly effects automatics. It's just like disconnecting the computer connection to the sensor that sends signals to the computer telling it if the car is moving and oaw fast. If disconnected on GM vehicles the transmission freaks and sometimes doesn't allow the transmission to change gears at all and stays in first gear. GM made sure that if trying to disconnect the speedometer to save on milage it doesn't let the cars run properly.

Proper plus-sizing of tires should have almost no affect on gear ratios or transmission characteristics. If the overall diameter of the wheel + tire stays the same or close to stock, nothing will be off. Transmission slippage in this case is due to either faulty shift solenoids or bad programming of the transmission ECU. I never knew that about GM cars though

Thanks to whoever posted that tsb on that website. It is so much nicer to have the entire tsb in hand instead of just the # that nhtsa gives you. My favorite part is #1 and #24, if the techs don't do this give them hell.

Dealer called me at work and said the problem could not be replicated. I reminded him that my vehicle was made during the affected period. He said he would keep the car overnight and call me today. He wanted to test drive it after it had sat overnight and was cold. Maybe I'll luck out and have a perfectly operational TCM...? Or maybe I have an intermittent problem that eventually screws up my tranny. Atleast the service department is fixing the interior cloth on the passenger's door, which appears uneven and loose.

I would remove the intake just to be safe, the dealer will only have the car in the air if they change the soleniods, so it is not likely they will see the y-pipe. Sometimes nissan service departments can be *****Y. I had a dealer give me a rough time on my 4th gen max with intake and many other mods.

NO TCM

Dealer said that my car performs within specs and tranny didn't slip once when he drove it. No new TCM for me. Hopefully my car is one of the few built right.

Result

Just got my car back. Good news and bad news. THey told me the problem do apply to my car and the chip is on national back order. Another bad news is that they told me my front breaking pads r bad and possible rotors change. I was like whatttttttttttttt. I only have 12000 miles on it. And he told me that it's not covered under warranty. : (

Re: Result

I must have a good dealer. Gaithersburg Nissan replaced my warped rotors imder warranty. I don't think pads would be covered under warranty, unless they are defective. They also took care of my TCM and solenoid.

Actually, your rotors *are* covered up to 120000 miles...

check out your warranty booklet and show it to the dealer.
