CAI doesnt really help that much. Only when you are standing still or moving at low speeds does it help. You will get enough air flow while at higher speeds so the only thing it helps is low end torque. Is it worth gutting your car? I dont think so. I wish i had got the injen with a bypass valve from AEM
I just installed the Injen with the optional heat shield and it has a very nice growl, along with some nice HP. If you have an auto you'll have a small chalenge with the auto dipstick but if you have a dremmel you'll get buy.
Place Racing is hidden below the battery in a section behind the Left Fog light. That area is outside the Engine bay.
The Injen is not a CAI. It is best classified as a WAI (Warm Air Intake). It still draws air from the engine bay but the area is in front of the engine and down low. Place Racing is the only true CAI.
I will be modifying my splash guard to bring air right onto the Injen filter.

And my own experience with the Injen, with dyno's to back it up, showed a reduction in HP/TQ with the Injen over the stock intake.

First of all, consider the Cattman CAI, since its made by PR, but we substutute some nicer hardware and its $15 cheaper than Place Racing's price. Plus, we support maxima.org and they don't and, only we have the "All-Black" version in its deep glossy powdercoat finish, made just for Cattman.
As someone else notes in the thread, the Injun is not a CAI. That brand, and maybe another one or two, is promoted on the basis of "not having to cut a hole". The trade-off is that the filter ends up in the last place you'd want it, and certainly not in a location for sucking in cool, clean air -- quite the opposite.
The location of the filter in the PR/Cattman CAI is the only optimal one in the car. The air is coolest in that protected compartment behind the headlight and it gets the cleanest air too. When the filter is positioned down alongside the engine block, its still getting hot air, and its also exposed to damaging road debris, and all the dust, mud, water, etc. that being in an exposed position to the roadway means.
Power advantage only at stop or low speeds? No, I'd have to disagree with that -- in fact, the power advantage is more pronounced at speed, and I say this because although our CAI makes power on a dyno, its advantage shows up better in "real life" testing, e.g. track times. The cold air is not the only variable here. The PR/Cattman CAI is particularly well engineered for stabilizing turbulant airflow, which is critical to getting a stable reading from the hotwire in the MAF. The faster the car is going, the more turbulant the air, and that feature becomes more important. That's why our CAI tends to have a race advantage over other filters even when the weather isn't that hot.
Finally, about those bypass valves, don't bother. With a PR/Cattman CAI, there is no threat from any form of water (rain, etc.) except deep water in the roadway. At the height of the CAI filter, you would have to be in water at least 13-15" deep (depending on if your car is lowered) before it would be sucked up into the engine (the filter would have to be almost submerged). That may not sound like much, but measure the height of your door sill. If you are in water 14" deep the interior of your car will be flooding very quickly and most people I know have never been dumb enough to end up in that position. Plus, my customers have told me that the valves are not as trouble free as some would suggest and can partially block the airflow.
We've got plenty in stock for all 89-04 Maximas, $215 in black, $220 in silver. Just call 800.759.9920.
Headers are on the way!
Hope this information is useful.

Ive got one on my 02 max and love it a lot.Im not so happy with the fit but i think it's the installers fault, i have a little binding as the engine moves during gear shifts.I dyno'd once with the aem bypass valve on it and it really sucks, you can feel the power drop off as you hit it hard so i took the valve off, problem fixed .I haven't dyno'd it with the valve off yet and am in no hurry to do so.I can feel the tires breaking traction with just a little bit effort.I also have the greddy catback. If you buy one you wont be dissapointed as long as the shop follows exactly what they are supposed to do so the fit is perfect,if there is such a thing with aftermarket parts .Good luck and enjoy it.
the injen may not "Add horsepower" but it certainly changes your cars power. I get better throttle response, and it makes a pleasant noise which is what all intakes do (and afterall, is 7 horse power something to get so excited about, big deal). With the few mods we have, I am not suprised this mod doesn't do much, but everyone wants one... Adding an intake doesn't exactly turn my maxima into a racecar, it was just a fun thing to add and did more or less what I expected. I could easily have the stock one in and be just as happy, i bought the stupid thing and it's there.
I wouldn't cut my car up for cold air, and I'm not really worried about it sucking in water, i live in new york and have been in the nastiet of snow, rain that is around here with the car out, and no trouble.
I wouldn't really discourage someone from buying an injen intake, a PR, cattman, whatever, I wouldn't say it's like a dramatic upgrade or anything, that's all.
These are my opinions, so please don't bother arguing, i just wanted to make an argument, not start some intake war.

Some of you make too big of a deal out of a "Air intake", first things first, I have Injen installed right now and I have no regrets for it. I dunno if it adds more HP since I never had the car Dyn before but its certainly better than "Stock air Box".
Second, most intake are pretty much the same, Frankin Car, Injen, PR, whatever... "It filters air faster than stock paper type filter" Then there's the design of the piping. So between the the intakes, there's probably less than 1~2HP differents.
If you really want to use the full potential of your "intake", you would have to replace the headers, Y-pipe, high flow cat, B-pipe, and ofcourse a nice exhaust.
Only thing I have to say about Injen is, the cone filter that came with the intake system is too small so I would replace it with a K&N Xtream filter or something bigger.
