too much motor oil?

Hey I changed my motor oil this weekend and it was on a little hill downwards so i dont think i got all of the oil out. I put in 4.25 quarts. But when I measure with the dip stick the reading is like off the charts. What happens if there is too much oil?

You can hydrolock the motor, but it would take ALOT of oil. If it is 1/2qt too full, don't worry about that.

I think you made a mistake by doing it on a forward downhill. As you know, the drain hole is in the back. Even a slight downhill is going to leave quite a bit of old oil in the front of the pan and it can contaminate the new oil.

You'll probably end up with some blow by.
Just pop the drain plug and let some out.
Another example of why there are professional mechanics.

The dipstick's not very accurate on mine; it shows WAY off the scale even after draining it all (forward uphill, filter change) and putting 4.25qts in there...
I'm considering going to the dealer about it after I do the next oil change, so I can tell them with an absolute straight face that I know exactly how much oil is in there...

Well I actually parked downhill on my drivway and jacked up the front to try and make it striaght but at the 4th level of the jack i was too scared to go anymore. Not that big of deal ill just drain it and get another bottle of mobil 1

I just did an oil change on my 2K2 last night. I had the car on a flat surface and let the hot oil drain for 15 minutes...until there were no more drips of oil coming out. I then added 4-1/4 quarts of Mobil 1 and when I checked the oil dip stick, it was well above the "FULL" line on the stick. I think the dipsticks aren't that accurate on the 2K2...but what do I know?? I know this much: I put in the exact amount required, so I'm not going to worry about it too much besides keeping an eye on it to see if it adjusts after some driving.

BTW: I installed one of those Fram Sure Drain oil drain plugs and the thing works great!!! I highly recommend it for us people who do our own oil changes.

FRAM® SureDRAIN™ Fast Access Oil Change System
The easier way to change your oil. Now you can drain your oil with no tools, no mess and no hot oil on your hands with the revolutionary new SureDRAIN Fast Access Oil Change System brought to you by the trusted name in filters….FRAM.

Now you can have instant access to your oil with just a turn of the wrist!

Proprietary SureDRAIN Valve - this unique, heavy duty Actuator Valve is precision engineered to permanently replace your existing oil drain plug and allow instant oil access and draining.

Twist on Drain Hose - Designed for fast, easy, twist on operation, the heavy duty FRAM drain hose starts the flow of oil directly into your receptacle with the turn of your wrist.

Added Protection Dust Cover - To keep the SureDRAIN valve free from road dirt and safe from undercarriage debris, the ultra-rugged SureDRAIN dust cover locks firmly into place until the next oil change. Like all SureDRAIN parts, this dust cover has been tested against leaks, corrosion, vibration and road damage.

When you checked the dipstick, did you let in run for 5 minutes or so to get the oil ciruculated fully through the galleys or just fill it up and check?

I know this sounds stupid, but are you reading the back side of the dipstick? The side with the hatching on it? I get the same off-the-chart reading on the frontside, but the backsides usally a good 1/2 inch below that. Peace_

The backside is usually spotty, with drops of oil on the dipstick here and there... no definitive "line" stating "HERE'S the oil level", definitely not near the hatchmarks.
I'll take another look next time I get gas just to be sure, though...

When you refill the oil goes right past the dip stick, its that way on the 3.0 VQ also. If you let it sit for a 1/2hr or more with the stick 1/2 way, or all the way, out then take your reading you'll be much more accurate.

If your wooried about to much oil and don't have a SureDrain then just put a new oil filter on. If it's a high dollar filter put it in the box upside down and use it on your next change.

you have to read it after a few hours...preferrable the next morning for the most accurate reading. oil will be everywhere after the fill and the dipstick will pick it up. give it some time.

This oil ting shouldn't be a big deal. Drain it any old way. Toss in 4 quarts, run it a few minutes, shut it off, wait a few minutes and top it up as needed.

I wasa under the impression that excess oil gets burn up/blown out

Not much will happen if you overfill it just a little. Some engines will tolerate more of an overfill than others, though I'd avoid overfilling by more than about 1/8 qt for street use.

Way overfill it and the crank will slap the free surface of the oil and turn it into foam (read: build pressure in the crankcase, which isn't too good for the crank oil seals).
