Car Pinging After Y-Pipe

Has anyone had any problems with their car pinging after they have installed a y-pipe? It's a little louder now but when I give it throttle i get a sound that I think sounds like pinging.... And it wont go away. I figured if it was pinging the Car would retard the timing (I dont have the timing advanced) or if it could give it more gas. Any ideas anyone?

are you sure the engine is pinging and its not the y pipe hitting the black cross member right before the cat? look under the car and there is a black cross member right before the cat that must either be removed or lowered by putting washers on top of the bolts to keep it from hitting.

Wouldnt that cause a ratteling? i had a ratteling but fixed that problem already. I dont get ratteling, but if the y-pipe hitting against the black cross member sounds sorta like pinging then maybe that's it.

if there was a lot of pinging would it throw an ses code?

most people get a pretty violent vibration but perhaps yours is just barely touching the brace. im assuming that you use high octane gas eitehr 93 or 91? i dont think the ecu would throw a code for engine pinging because the knock sensor will retard timing to prevent detonation if that occurs. some have had light pinging espically in the summer with the a/c on even though they run 93.

Run nothing but 93.... By I get a lot of pinging when I give it throttle. Has anyone done anything to try to resolve this... Maybe a bigger fuel pump or something to get more fuel to the engine.

I think studman had this problem on his 2k2 and used a Greddy E-manage to mess with the A/F mix to fix it... never heard of it on a 2000-2001 though.

Is there any way that I can mess with the A/F mix without the Greddy E-manage. I really cant afford it

What kind of pipe? Who did the install? O2 sensor still functioning? All seals good? Not all pipes or installs are created equally. I'd take the pipe off and see if it goes away first, bolts can't be too tight yet, easy deinstall.

Well the O2 sensor I am assuming is still working cause wouldnt it throw a SES code... The seals I am fairly sure are good. I made sure they were torqued to the right specs that was in the service manual.... But the pinging only started after I put on the pipe. I am fairly sure it would go away with the OEM pipe on.... My cousin implied that since I have freed up a lot of restriction the engine may now need more gas.... So I am stumped.... Anyone?

You really shouldn't need to... if the car is pinging something else is wrong. There are hundreds of 2000-2001 Maximas with y-pipes and I don't think anyone has needed an aftermarket fuel management system for a y-pipe.

If this is true, then I am really up the creek, cause i have no clue what could be wrong then..... The only thing that really changes between the OEM and the new y-pipe is less restriction and the precats so How can that cause pinging now?

LOL there's a big problem. For one I have the same problem with my y-pipe. The problem is the hanger mount that comes with the pipe is hitting the mount on the car. The mount is close to the cat and both mounts(one from the car and one for the pipe) go in to a rubber hanger. Case close!!!!

Try to cut it or take it off!!!!!!!!!!!

What Y-pipe do you have? I've got the Warpspeed on my 2K2 and had to remove that brace. Also had to bend that hanger up, and connect it to the rubber mount the best I could. Still hear some ringing here and there...
