strength of 2k2 auto tranny?

as far as modifying for high hp i.e. turbo, nitrous, or supercharging, how strong is the 2k2 auto tranny? im quite new to maximas but i do know that manuals are generally stronger and can handle more power. but up to what point does the auto transmission on the 2k2 max start to become a liability as in terms of holding up to the power? and what is the max amount of tq or hp an auto 2k2 tranny hold reliably daily driving without fortification?

From what Ive been told, the new 5th gen tranny (2k2+) is different from the weak 2k-2k1 ...

The "weak" 00-01 auto is still pretty sturdy and reliable compared to the current Honda V6 automatics.

no one has boosted a 2k2 yet, so the tranny has held up fine for everyone as far as i know. How about those with NOS?? Any problems? Again, I havent seen anything posted on the board, and there are several guys running 75 shot or so of NOS... sounds like a fairly strong tranny to me!

Use the drop resistor mod and run all the power you want. Jime is proof that all you really need is the drop resistor for autos and lots of power.

Y2KSESteve, can you post a reference link for the drop resistor mod for us automagic geeks? I would certainly appreciate it...

I have it done to my 2k maxima. The sensor is in the exact same spot. All you need to do is unplug it.

not wanting to get off topic...but the answer to my question still remains unanswered. so as far as the 2k tranny's how strong are they? since no one seems to know much about the 2k2 trannys.

I drive my car pretty hard and am not exactly easy on my tranny. I've had the sensor unplugged for almost 10k miles and my tranny is still going strong. I have 67k miles on my car.

So what exactly does the sensor do? Any side effects from disconnecting it?

Un-plugging it gives the tranny full line pressure and is actually aot better for your tranny.

Interesting. So basically Nissan put it there just to make the shifts more "casual"?

That's exactly the reason they put it there.

When I got my vb mod done by Don he inspected the tranny and said he didn't see anything different about it. He said (as far as he could tell) it was identical to the 2k-2k1 trannies. I was the first 2k2 to get this done and he looked over it fairly well to see if he would have to change the procedure.

I think I remember Nissan saying something about beefing it up though. So he could've missed something.

This will set off an SES light and probably will make your O/D light blink at startup. I dropped 2 tenths of a second off my ¼ mile time by just unplugging the sensor, so yes, even stock autos will benefit. A lot of people only unplug it for use at the track. I personally like the way it shifts, so I use it all the time.

if you want to do this, I would suggest you hook up a potentiometer with a dial in place of the resistor. Make sure the pot can handle the current and you should be good to go... you can then 'dial' in the tranny firmness.

Write ups? heh heh. Looks like this will be my next ghetto mod...

Will it be okay if I ignore the SES lights and what ever pops up?

What if you connected back again? Does everything go back to normal? SES light stays on or not?

Steve, how did you ever find this? I did it last night and the drive in to work this morning was awesome. The 1-2 shift is very hard and 2-3 is a little quicker. I have been considering a vb mod and always wondered what it would feel like. From what I've read and felt this morning, I think this is pretty close and for no money and can be undone if needed! Very cool.

Oh, wth i went ahead and did it.

These guys are right about the stronger shifts, but it's way too strong for my tastes. When pulling out of the driveway and/or trying to go slow the shifts really get to you - not only do you feel it, but it makes a *thud*. 1-2 is quite abrupt, 2-3 is moderately so.

I also tried gunning it from a stop to highway speeds, i didn't like it. The shift is just *hard*. Not like 1-2 shifts on a manual hard... but car shaking/thud sounding hard.

Didn't get an SES light, but when i reattached the connector i had my AT light blink. Turned the engine off a sec, turned the ignition to ACC for a couple of seconds and started. AT light gone.
