Greetings,
I have the need for more speed. I currently have an 00 auto w/ frankencar and I feel I need something different. I'm not sure if I should
trade in my 00 for a 6 speed Max or get a Turbo for my 00. I've always liked the 6 speed but they are hard to come across someone selling theirs and taking my 00 as a trade in. I owe $13,000 on my Max.
I don't have tons of money to throw around. What should I do?
Thanks in advance for all advice.

The turbo will just be a big money pit.
You could try finding a 95-99 Maxima 5spd (a lot more common cars) and modding it. There's tons you can do to them as far as bolt-on's and boost. You could sell your 00 and get a 4th gen for much cheaper and still have money left over for mods.

You'll lose more on selling/trading the '00 and buying a 6spd 2K2+, then just going turbo on the 2K.
IMO, IF you have ~$6K to do the turbo RIGHT, ie gauges, tranny cooler, intercooler option, and VB mod, then keep the 2K and turbo it, if you don't, keep the 2K and drop $1500 in nitrous+goodies.

You are kinda in bad shape with your 2000. You might be able to break even on the 2000 if you sell it yourself, if you trade it in, You are finished.. best thing to do right now is to sit around and try to get the Payoff down on the 2K. or try to sell privetly and come even, and then get a 6spd. DON'T TRADE !!!

He could sell his 2k privately for $13k, buy a used 4th Gen 5spd for WAY less than that which are much easier to come by, mod it, get it running 14's or even 13's which is way faster than a 00 NA auto, and not be in the hole anymore than he already is. The turbo kits are not that reliable anyways, so he'd probably need a beater or a secondary car. More cost.Originally Posted by IceY2K1

if you're between a turbo or a 2002 or 2003 I would say definately get the 02 or 03.
Sell privately and don't trade in. putting a turbo in is a money pit. And if you ever try and sell it you're going to find it hard to sell and even harder to get more money than a stock car.

Alot of turbo bashing here! I've had my PFI kit for months now w/no problems from the kit or the turbo performance itself. If you want power and want to save money, get the turbo its a no brainer! You'll pay alot more to trade up to a 2k2 +.... and then you'll want to mod so you'll be spending even more.
Dont believe the hype about the turbos being a money pit. The problem IMO is no one on here really has the money to back up the mods they have on their cars. So if you have extra money to spend, get the turbo, get it installed right and you wont regret it.

I think I'm in the minority here who doesn't modify their car. My opinion about modifying cars is that it creates a money pit. You swap this, or that, put a turbo in etc etc... many thousands of dollars are spent and if you just went out and bought the car you wanted in the first place it would have cost the same or cheaper.
If you buy a 30K max then put 10K into it, you coulda bought a BMW 330CI. And maybe the Max is faster and could beat the Bimmer on the track and from stoplight to stoplight. but at the end of the day, you still have a modded Max not a BMW.
a turbo will be faster than a newer 3.5, however, it will change engine life and getting it right isn't easy.
if he gets 13 for his car, plus 5 for the turbo, now he's at 18, which can get you an 02

I agree with Chris that no matter how much you modify your car it will still be a Nissan. MaxJag - you need to supress your "need for speed" since you can barely afford your 2K GXE auto, according to the pay-off balance.
I'm quite sure-once all the goodies are out for 2k2-2k3- 6 speeds could break into the high 13's without boost- how much faster u wanna go? -street legal

I just feel higher levels of boost in any form shouldn't be used until the car is at least close to paid off and not your daily driver. Unless you've got the cash to burn.
I am also in the "would rather a nice and quick enough for me reliable car that's still stock boat. After my old car was wrecked which I bought new in 2001, I definitely wanted something quicker but also didn't want to start all over on payments on an equally or more expensive car. So I got something much quicker and used and pretty much just picked up payment where I left off from my old car from a cost perspective. I'll still be done paying it off at about the same time.

Barely afford? I didn't say anything about not affording it. I could drop $2,000 on it now if I wanted. BTW, its a loaded SE, I don't ride GXE. I got it in Feb. for 15,900 and it had 38K on it. I might look into a Lincoln LS or a 330 ci but I'm pretty sure I would be paying too much. Where are some good places to get a TURBO? I'll shop around a bit more.

I think they'd ALL change their tune after ridding in a turbo VQ...I know I did and all I can think about is how soon until I pull the trigger.Originally Posted by Deac

I'm working on a second 'beater' car for the down time.

Also, I agree 100%, if you don't have the money to back up the kit with ALL THE TRIMMINGS AND TUNING required...don't bother or you won't be happy.

Anyways, if you only have $2K, do nitrous, otherwise save up until you have at least $6K and go turbo.

Turbo/boost is cool, but I am also a member of the "If you're gonna do it, you might as well do it right or not at all" school of thought, and I have better uses for $6k right now. Maybe a few years down the road.

Why limit yourself between those 2 cars, the BMW is a very nice car but you can do just as well buying the G35 Sedan, it is every bit as fast, if not faster than the 330 and it looks just as, if not better than the BMW and it is cheaper in price, plus they are more exclusive.Originally Posted by MaxJag

The Lincoln would just be a waste if it is the V6, it has very little B@ll$ and you're looking for speed, if it is the V8, I'd say go for it but definitely stay away from the V6, oh and I forgot to mention it is a FORD and we all know what that means=F_cked Over Rebuilt Dodge.
No offense to Ford owners.
Want a fast car with brutal acceleration that will rape any stock Maxima?
Sell your '00 Auto for ~$13000.
Buy a '93-97 Z28 6spd w/low mileage for $10000. Spend $200 on 5% tint, $350 on a Flowmasters catback/tips, and save the other $2450 for insurance.

Nitrous sucks unless you go to the track. For the amount of money I spent on nitrous fill-ups and accessories, I could have bought a friggin turbo.

exactly, on a non built motor... its not my kinda thing to do. My car is my mode of transportation, a turbo kit i might do, but NOS is just out of the question Originally Posted by maximaman777

Its so much extra horsepower at once, even two stage or progressive seems pretty intense. It's just reality that the more you modify a car away from stock, the less reliable it's going to be. So with an S/C and especially a turbo, not only do you need the money for the parts, tuning, and accessories, but also an additional budget for fixing whatever happens to blow up. It may be reliable for awhile, but you can only control what you can predict. It's the unpredictable or the unexpected that always sneaks around and kicks you in the butt. That's why boosting can be a big money pit no matter how careful you are.
How about throwing in a supercharger? If you still owe $13k, I think you should keep your car. When you dont owe any money, then you can start thinking about trading. If you do trade, you are just diggin yourself a bigger debt hole; that's if you upgrade to a newer model.

$6,000 for a TURBO? Damn! Does that come with all the gauges and other good stuff? Intercooler?
Maybe I should put it on a credit card.
Or I could just get rims and the stillen aero kit. I would be happy going that route too.
I have the frankencar and love it. Would I notice anything with a Y-Pipe? I want to be fast like that HLH0501 guy!!
