transmission jerk

when im coasting around and then i suddenly press the accelarator i feel this like this thump or jerk in the transmission....im pretty sure it's not the car downshifting because i know what that sound like so im just wondering if this is normal and if anyone else has had this problem....and if it's serious enough for me to take it to the dealership...the car runs normally and when i apply the gas slowly it doesn't do this.

Do you have automatic or Manual?

If its Automatic its NOT normal, because it transfer power through a torque converter and when push hard you should just feel the car Pulling and not feel a "jerk".

On a Manual its normal to have a little jerk depending on your RPM, lets say I'm crusing @4th gear doing 40MPH at 2000RPM holding the gas pedal steady. I let go the gas pedal, the car will slow down because now the momentium of the tranmission is holding the RPM as it drop slowly. I then push the gas pedal back again, the engine speed now picks up and now the "pull" is now reversed b/c engine is now transfering power to transmission, thats when the jerk comes it.

Power is transferred mechanically instead of hydralically, thus a "little jerk"

If you're just coasting and get back onto the gas semi quickly you probably would feel a jerk. Ease into the gas and you shouldn't have that happen.

haha, it shouldn't "screw up" your car, since the car's designed to accelerate
It can wear out the car faster than if you were easy on it all the time... but that goes with just about anything...

This is one of the great "features" of our auto tranny. It's most pronounced around 40 mph. I found that if I give it more gas, the thump is reduced.

I have a 2K2 auto as well. The thump is completely normal on an auto. it is the torque converter locking and unlocking. You will expecially notice it around 40 MPH. Ease on the gas slowly and you will not notice it much. I've had several automatic cars and they have all done this to some degree.
