Local dealer wants $260 to reprogram ECM on Y2K Maxima

Just wanted to share this with you...
I have SES light on and "Tree way catalyst.." error

Does anybody control those dealers in terms of pricing?
Shame on NISSAN...
My next car is Lexus

You sure that's ONLY for the reprogram?

Sometimes they require replacing a part also.

Anyways, if it's just for the reprogram, that is a scam. It only takes 30mins. tops to reflash the ECU.

Careful! I thought emission equipment was on a 50,000 mile warranty from Nissan! 3-way cat error should fit that.

It sure didn't replace my O2 sensor I asked!

I have two local nissan dealers. The one that is closest to me - and that sucks badly in the service dept - wanted to charge only one hour service for the ECM. $60 or $65. That's about the easiest $60 to make in the world. They plug it in and go drink a coffee.

As mentioned there must be something else happening - or find another dealer.

I asked those people a very simple question - How much is it to reprogram ECM? when error code was already known to me....
Service manager said $260...
Then he said they would need to do a diagnostic, which is $60, and I don't have to pay for it if I agree to do repair, which is $260.
So, total was still $260 - relieve....
But if diagnostic shows that they'd have to change sensors then it's a sensors price + couple hours of labor.

Cool? Ha...
I called NISSAN customer service today and opened a case...

Just simply do not pay it. Find another dealer. That's absolutely insane.

Why Nissan dealer would charge you for a diagnostic? If you're car is still within the manufacture warranty, then you shouldn't have to pay a dime for it? Unless it was something you done to the car such as modification.
I known some Nissan have some shoddy reputation for charging us for soemthing that is under the warranty. GOOD FOR YOU that you open the case with Nissan Customer service. I hope that dealer get the SHAFT!!!

Well, I have a couple of "local" dealers in the area.
I called all of them
They say the upgrade of ECM program is $80, but they also want to charge me for diagnostic, which is $60-$80 depending on a dealer.
So, $160+tax....relieve

If I were you, I would drive to your nearest Autoparts store and have them pull the code from the check engine light, then post it here.

Most likely, it's one of the common issues we've seen and you can just tell them to perform the reflash and forget the diagnostic. If it doesn't fix it, you'll then pay the diagnostic and any future repairs they make.

Yeah talk to manager. You have to be firm. You can diagnose the problem yourself at autozone almost certainly. Hell, get them to reset the CPU or discon the battery wire (negative) and leave it for a bit, then rehook it up. Then, you can go into nissan and ask for an ECM upgrade and just not mention the check engine light.

It's your money and tell them that you do not see a need for disagnoses. You want only an ECM upgrade and that's all you're paying for.

The code , which was pulled out 2 times is the same - P0420 (Three way catalyst...)
ECM reprogramming is required....

The service manager said that they will guarantee this job only if they do the diagnostic.
In this case they may just as well not to upgrade anything, but tell me they did the upgrade, cause if upgrade "does not help" they are not responsible...how would I control them? how can I check if new program was installed?
