There is no difference using that method. That picture is from the service manual that Nissan publishes for the Maxima. The only difference is the fact that it mentions the ten flashes afterwards.

Here's the deal:

If you wait seven seconds and then press the pedal and hold it, and then wait until the SES flashes, it will give you the error codes that the computer stores. Each set of flashes is a number from 0 to 9 (with ten flashes equalling zero) and after four sets, if it flashes ten times each set (ie. between the pauses) that means the error code is 0000.

For example, if your gas cap is loose and your SES light comes on normally, and you check the error (which by the way is 0442), you will see ten flashes, a pause, four flashes, a pause, four flashes, a pause, and then two flashes.

This is useful for troubleshooting why the SES light is on, and if you have a buddy with a service manual, he can tell you the possible causes.

If there is only one error it will repeat it. If there are two, the four sets of flashes will be different.
