Best sound for 2002 SE

Absolutely love car but the stock stereo sucks. My rental(my max in body shop Idiot ran red light 10k in damage) Focus (ford) has a better stock stereo. Does upgrading speakers help? Or should I do the after market route?

Thanks Ed

What are you looking for? SPL? SQ? Want to keep headunit or not? What are you looking to spend? More info if needed.

I'll keep the head unit if a speaker upgrade makes a significant improvement. Not interested in a bumper. Just clean sound, Stock is pretty muddy.. Money not an issue...

As far as I know, the only way to change your speakers is to change your HU along with them..

Something along those lines.. I know you can get the buttons on your steering wheel to work with aftermarket HU's with an adapter for around $60, but I am pretty sure that the HU is not compatible with new speakers.

I have what's in my signature running off stock Bose 6disc in-dash, and it sounds pretty damn good.

Yes, because I did not change my HU. I have stock speakers and the stock HU, but aftermarket amp and sub.

If you take your car to almost any upscale competent audio installation place they do it. I was looking at upgrading the stereo in my I35 and the head unit was no issue with new ****.

This is not true. I have the non-Bose system and swapped the stock Clarion speakers out for 250w Pioneer speakers and the sound is much improved. Eventually I'll add an amp and subwoofer to add a little more thump.
