I read the FAQ's but am just a bit scared. The FAQ's read:
A number of org members run 235/45R17 and 245/45R17 tires on their OEM rims. Those who run these tires generally do so because of the much wider selection of high-performance tires available in these sizes. Unfortunately, no tire manufacturer will authorize the use of these tire sizes on 7.0"-wide rims. To date, however, no incidences of tire failure have been reported as a result of running these sizes on the OEM rims.
235/45R17: This tire size is NOT in spec on 7.0"-wide rims. (The minimum acceptable rim width for this tire size is 7.5".) It produces a speedometer error of 2.1%, well within the recommended maximum speedometer error of 3.0%. Load ratings for this tire will normally equal or exceed that of the 225/50R17 (load rating 93) and should not be a factor in selecting tires of this size. Watch for abnormal wear characteristics if you select a tire in this size.
Can any other org members chime in with their experiences???
Thanks for the prompt reply hombre

Tire Rack
Just give the guys at TireRack.com a call, they will let you know what sizes are within the 3% for the Maxima. I was told that the only other safe size for the 7 inch rim 17 inch tire was 235/50/17. Any other sizes on the Nissan Rim would be over 3% and throw the speedometer quite a bit.

i have yokohama and kumhos that are 235/45/17 and they seem to be fine. they've lasted for the last 5k miles and it still seems to be workin fine. no unusual wear and stuff that i've noticed...

FWIW: Can't speak "with experience" because I'm in research/purchase mode myself. I can say this.
1. I too am staying on stock 17" x 7JJs by choice.
2. I have run the calculator ad naseum (great tool)
3. I am staying with 225/5X-17's.
The only decision for me yet, 50's versus 55's (225/55-17’s calculate to +1.6% and 225/50-17’s calculate to -1.7%, both within accepted tolerance)

Another FWIW....I too would like to stay with the stock wheels, and have heard good things about the Sumitomo HTR+'s. Naturally they do not come in the factory size, and not really sure I want to spend the $$$ for the Pilots. I decided to write Sumitomo and ask if there are plans to add the factory size for us. He did mention that it would happend, eventually, but could take another 9+ months. I guess the reason for this is that an agreement was made with Nissan and only a few tire companies...so that Nissan can buy them for dirt cheap initially to install for their new models! That might not be the exact or best explanation...but that's it in a nutshell. So maybe in the near future, we will start seeing a better selection from others as well. He did also mention they do not recommend the 234x45/17 for the Max's factory wheel.

Ugh that sucks because the ones I want are affordable and look good and can handle snow. Everything else sucks *** and now I am freaked out about trying the 235/45 on stock rims.
One thing I dont get is that the 234/50's fit but the 45's dont. Why is that its just sidewall height.

Hope you don't mind me askin this ? in your thread Fuel, I don't feel like startin a new thread for a dumb ques. like this one though :
W/225/45/17 the speedo error is like 3.5%. Does this affect only the speed measurement or will it have an effect on the miles recorded on the odometer also?

A couple of comments, I've been running Dunlop SP5000 tires for about 20k in the 235/45/17 size. Looking at the top of the mounted tire, the tread is "curved" from the outer sidewall to the inner sidewall at about 34PSI. If I drop the air pressure, the curvature goes away, but the handling gets "squishy". I will not use 235/45 again.
Besides 225/50, you could consider 235/50 and 215/55 (stock size on certain 2K3 with 17" rims).

235/45/17 will work fine I have AutoX'ed on my Potenza RE950's on OEM rims for a season and a half running 50psi+ at times and have had NO problems at all. If this kind of torture didn't break them a littke sprited street driving will be a walk in the park.
