Ohm is a measure of resistance. 4 Ohm is more resistance than 2 ohm. Home speakers are usually 8 ohms, cars are normally 4. Bose feels they are special so they built it for 2.

which is preferable? more or less? or does it depend on the application?

To be honest, i'm not completely sure in terms of speakers. Just thinking out loud I would think that a lower resistance speaker would be more sensitive, but wouldn't hold up as well (distort or blow up) at high volumes (because more current is allowed to pass through it). If you look at car amps, some say 2ohm or even 1 ohm stable. This is because the lower the ohm rating on the speaker, the hotter the amp will run.

I am also assuming that Bose does 2 ohms to that they can place a tweeter and a mid in series and get a 4 ohm load. (resistors add when in series).

I'm not an audio guy so I could be off on a couple of these comments.

Correct,
On a bose system, speakers in the doors and the sub in the back is 2 ohm. The tweeters are 4 ohm

As far as "what's better", I'm not sure... I think the resistance (or impedance, actually, which is resistance produced by different methods like inductive/capacitive reactance) has more to do with the magnet/driver. Maybe some research (try google) could reveal how lower impedance vs. higher impedance speaker drivers compare.

Ah, someone was paying attention in his electronics class. I kinda was, but it's been almost 8 years since I had an analog class. They were a prereq.
