Check out these bulbs:

I'm planning on trying them out, though I've heard some issues about uneven illumination using LEDs.

The 168 superbright's will probably just burn the circuit board. The circuit board can only handle the bulb wattage it's designed for. As far as the 5th gener's, the bulbs are much smaller than 168/194. They are a V-2 type bulb or something. This has been discussed before but no real solution yet to get these brighter, unless you go indiglo!

I want to keep the stock look, indiglo looks too bright and ricey. Is there anyway to put a sheet of indiglo material behind the gauge cluster and use that for lighting? I don't know if the material is sold plain and it will be a problem mounting it behind stock guage cluster. Just an idea.

I was thinking the same exact thing - using EL Strips found at SVC. I'm just not sure it'll work as planned.

I did a little swapping when I installed my gauge rings and here's what I found.... First the bulbs are T-1-1/2 (glass size) with a W2.1d base. A #74 from autozone will fit just fine and is the same wattage, but the glass size is just slightly wider and longer. It fits fine but the bulb filiment is placed slightly farther from the base and makes the lighting VERY uneven. The very small difference in bulb lenght makes a very BIG difference in how the diffuser picks up and throws the light throughout the gauge. It becomes very obvious where the bulbs are located in the cluster. To keep the stock look, I think the ONLY alternative bulb would be a T-1-1/2 at a wattage of about 3.5-4. Ours are 2.3-3. This would ensure the filiment is inline with the diffuser for even disbursment with slightly higher output. Problem is I haven't been able to locate such a beast. Check out http://www.harison-toshiba.com/ for more info.

That's a good idea, but too bad they aren't EL Sheets instead of strips, those look like a PITA to line up and make even.

I fitted some celophane behind the guage face and now it lights up to a blue/purple. The only problem is that it's not very bright.
