Wow...nobody's an AE fan.
I would take a 5th gen 5spd Max over a 2k2 Auto Maxima.
The highway top end is awesome on a 5spd. The 2k2 auto have the down low and thats it. Mid range is the same and 5spd will pull like mad on a 2k2 auto out on the highway. 4th gear (on the 5spd) seals the deal everytime. Short shifters available. Bolt on turbos and SC currently available. HIDS are a no biggie . Buy them used later or retrofit.

well if you aren't going to mod the car heavily (like turbos or s/c and such) then go for the 2k2...if you have plans or would like to keep that option open--2k1 AE 5spd
and there definitely will be a turbo/sc released for the 2k2/2k3--it looks like there is a lot of interest
let us know what you pick! i am sure you will..lol

VQ-K motor owns 3.5s on top end :P I ran my friends 3.5 6spd on the eway from 60MPH roll, I was pulling on him by like 5-6 car lenghts to 130MPH. We stopped there. His has a Franken intake, ypipe, no cat, and UD pulley. Vs my moded out 3.0 5spd K motor. Plus with JWT cams ready, TechnoSpeed or whatever the name ECU the car should put out 255WHP with some headers.

I run a S-AFC for now- till my ECU arrives, I gained 11.3WHP at redline from just tuning it on a Dynojet, Apexi Rev/Speed meter to remove speed limiter- Extrude honed intake manifold- both lower and upper parts....etc... I have witness' and all to back up my claims. I will soon have a video when we do a roll on the highway- when I spray 100 shot Venom into the K motor..... I pull about 20 cars on him from 70 to 130... its hard to tell. I'm a mechanic, currently building a drag IS300 with a Nissan straight six in it..... I'm not new to Nissans- have certifications from Nissan and all Plus the 3.5L like to "loose" set screws in the Throttle Body butterfly and spit em out the bottom of the engine- just ask your Nissan rep if hes seen any of those :P BTW everything U seen here is computer animated, and really didn't happen. YMMV, IMHO.

Aight, since we both go to the Nissan meets, how about a friendly race ? I'm putting down 100 bux for NA run, and $0.00 for a NOS run... I'll show ya the power of the K motor. Make sure to tighten up those butterfly screws...... I bought my Max when the 02s came out.... and one was sitting in the shop with a blown motor already- block split in the valley under the intake manifold.... Thats the reason why I have the K motor- no problems. 70K miles and still putting down 220+WHP NA. NOS since 2K miles.

come on you should know that all motors are different. now im no hardcore motor tune up man that deals with serious issues. but i work for a company that handles car repairs, and there are tauruses that have their engines split up at 20K and others run for 200K with no problems at all.....im not comparing a Taurus with a Maxima but all i'm stating is maybe your experience with VQ35DE's was with the few sh1tty motors that came out defected. just my $0.02

I'm not saying that VQ35 is a bad motor... but you guys make the 3.5L sound like its a baaaad ****, its like guys comparing the QR25DE powered SpecV SE-Rs to Integra GS-Rs.... yeah it might look good on paper... but GS-R will smoke the Spec V Stock for stock in any contest of speed... I also know that sometimes **** happens... but lately All new Nissan engine seem to fail- look at the QR25s... friggn SE-R list has mails about people blowing up headgaskets, rods sticking out of the block from just driving on the highway at constant speed, now the throttle butterfly screws on the FWD 3.5s.... From what I was told... the 3.5L FWD engines are made in US. Just like the wonderfull QR25 engine in the SE-R... But I wont call the VQ a POS like I do with the QR... stock for stock even a 10 year old SE-R with 300K miles on the odo will spank a new SE-R. I'm not trying to hate or anything, if I wanted a 3.5L I would buy it, if I wanted a used NSX I would buy it, but since the 3.0L has been so reliable I chose it over the 3.5L- which reminds me more of the POS VE30DE engine with its VTC sprocket problems- which some 3.5s already had encountered ! Ask any VE30DE driver how many VTCs have they repleaced.... same ole shieet on the 3.5s. I just buy the most reliable cars in the industry, and I work for both Lexus and Acura... see what I drive ? a 3.0L 5spd Maxima.

Wanna bet, they might not look the same... but they sure sound the same way when they go I aint calling it a POS... but man I reather have a VG30E with a 5spd than a VE :P sorry but the VG still rules the streets- 300K miles on my 90 SE 5spd when I sold it OE engine, ran like new, put down 165WHP with NISMO cams, ypipe, no cat, CAI, ECU... cams where mild too.

Please explain how they "go" out in technical terms because it's something I want to hear.
With minimal mods, I just put down 175hp and 185ftlbs torque. I don't have half my mods installed.

im not trying to flame anyone, just educate myself... yes 2002 is the first year that the VQ35 is in production, but it is an upgrade from the 3.0, and im guessing that the engineers built the 3.5 from the 3.0 base..(i might be wrong) so the 3.5 is just an upgraded 3.0 plus when you talk about reliable...i hope you mean the motor because i see o so many threads out there from people that are having major problems with their 2k - 2k1's
also if you look at my mod list i dont have any engine mods...i like to keep the engine stock, it has enough power as it is. And since the motor just came out, i dont think that it was designed for all those heavy bolt on mods that most ppl have when ther engines kick the bucket
so my major point is that every motor/car has its advantages/disadvantages... and it depends on what suits you.
but i would rather prefer the 2002 6-speed over a 2k1
and all this is IMO

I've browsed this forum for years before I bought my 2k2-(my grandfather has a 95 gle) and the 2k-2k1's have had way more probs
that i've seen the 3.5 have to date- so dont question the reliability of the VQ35- dont forget the Pathfinder was the first to rock the new VQ- so its been short stretch- but a good one so far!

lol the manager at my dealer is an idiot, he bought a used AE with 30K on it fully loaded for 18K and then sold it for 21K,
i almost called him an idiot to his face for buying it off of someone for 18
then i asked how much he would buy mine for he said 14, i said HELLS NO, he said 15 i said HEllS no again, he said 16, i told him not to even think about anything lower then 18 if he was stupid enough to buy the AE for 18....
but i was just "testing" my car with the GT tech pro, and omg how happy i am with my 2k2 6 speed

So as not to offend anyone, I'd rather have an Acura RSX-S.
Ok...as much as I respect the AE, I put my vote in for the '02 auto: HIDs, bodywork/grill/updates, 3.5L, similar in quickness to the 5-speed, etc are too hard to pass up. I'm too lazy to shift gears in a FWD sedan anyways...I just want to cruise.

If it must be an auto, you'd better get the 2K2.
2K-2K1 autos are dogs. My FIRST time at the track with only a pop charger, I was able to barely beat a 2K1 AE auto(time not w/reaction) that had all the bolt-ons with NUMEROUS time-slips under his belt, so it wasn't a bad driver.
Any 2K2+ auto that hooks out of the hole would whoop my azz stock vs. stock.

You asked what retrofitting the HIDs had to do with the engine.
I'm just saying that's not what he MEANT to say even though it sounded like it.
He meant the AE guys can retrofit the 2K2 HIDs easy enough so that's a wash between the AE and 2K2, but retrofitting the 2K2+ engine into the AE would be .
