My car is pinging .. I thought it had stopped but I must of gone deaf for a few months. But now I can hear that annoying pinging going down our quiet neighborhoods each day NISSAN SERVICE says they dont hear anything.. and one tech told me that the pinging is normal... Can somebody enlighten me on this "pinging" and how it doesnt have detrimental effects on the VQ35?
uhh, I think you're being sarcastic, right? Here's what the manual has to say about knocking... no 'ping' or 'pinging' found.

Octane rating tips
In most parts of North America, you should use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 or 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number. However, you may use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating as low as 85 AKI number in these high altitude areas [over 4,000 ft (1,219m)] such as: Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, northeastern Nevada, southern Idaho, western South Dakota, western Nebraska, and that part of Texas which is directly south of New Mexico.

Using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than stated above can cause persistent, heavy spark knock. (Spark knock is a metallic rapping noise.) If severe, this can lead to engine damage. If you detect a persistent heavy spark knock even when using gasoline of the stated octane rating, or if you hear steady spark knock while holding a steady speed on level roads, have your dealer correct the condition.
Failure to correct the condition is misuse of the vehicle, for which NISSAN is not responsible.

Incorrect ignition timing will result in knocking, after-run or overheating. This in turn may cause excessive fuel consumption or damage to the engine. If any of the above symptoms are encountered, have your vehicle checked at a NISSAN dealer or other competent service
facility.

However, now and then you may notice light spark knock for a short time while accelerating or driving up hills. This is no cause for concern, because you get the greatest fuel benefit when there is light spark knock for a short time under heavy engine load.

Anyway, you want to break into the 13s? Use your "proven" 100 octane and get this, Timing Advance Resistor and this, Intake Power Mod and you can spend a total of $30 on ebay and get nearly 50HP!! Those mods are going to help as much

Or you can realize which one of us is the dumb**** for pis*ing away money on something that 10 other people in this thread also agree DOES NOT HELP!

As many have mentioned in other posts, our (at least my) car still pings a little at times on premium fuel, and I ALWAYS use premium fuel. So..... is the ECU retarding the timing just a little during those times to manage that slight detonation? I bet it is... just a little. We all know that retarding timing lowers power output.... So it would make sense that using fuel that allowed the ECU to keep timing at it's highest designed level where detonation was just about to (but not) occur would provide the most power..... The guy's post is not about hard core PROOF, it's just his observation. We all post simple observations; as mentioned earlier... take it with a grain of salt!

I'm not trying to argue with anyone here, but after reading a lot of posts saying higher octane won't do anything for the VQ35DE - i'm getting more curious.
That's just the question I was going to ask; However, I don't think that question will be adequately answered here.

Personally, I use Exxon Supreme 93 octane; that being a function of a) my 2K2 Max being required to use 91 octane and b) the fact that Exxon here in NJ only offers 87, 89 and 93 octane.

Peace.

my dad always told me "if you make the other guy swear, you win, because if that's the most intelligent thing he can think of then the argument is over."

I win.
