replace new shift knob 2001 AE Auto Trans.
replace new shift **** 2001 AE Auto Trans.
how do you get the the A/T shift **** off for an 2001 AE Maxima? The shaft looks kinda square at the bottom, not round. I've tried twisting some, but not pushed it to hard yet, afraid of breaking. Do I need to hold in the selector as I turn?
Do all these other posts about removing A/T ***** apply to the AE? Silver Chrome, etc....
If I'm sitting in my seat, which way do I turn?
Please pardon the ignorance. I just rather ask than screw up my car.
Thanks

followup to my last email:
I twisted two turns and it came off.
However, I broke the OD wire at the base. I think the OD wires were wrapped around the lever at the bottom. Which may have been why a little hard to turn.
Anyway. I think I screwed it up. I slide the **** back on, but I can't get in back into place, in order to allow the gear selector to move. Currently, when I push in on the side, the rod in the midde in being pushed down partially. There is not enough clearance down at the bottom for the pin to clear for the selector to move. However, the screw holes are lined up.
Please help

Are the screws in the holes? If not, put them in. Turn ignition key to "on" but do not start the car. Move the shifter between gears, all the while holding your foot on the brake. Turn car off. Try again to see if the shifter works. If not, it is possible the wires could be blocking the shift mechanism but not likely. Last resort, remove your center console to see what is causing the problem. Should take 30 min ~ 1 hr.
thanks.
tried that. still didn't put enough pressure to push it underneath. There must be something blocking it.
i think i messed something up down there when i twisted the ****. was i not supposed to twist??

After removing my screws, the **** popped up a little (but not all the way off since the OD wires were holding it back). I had to remove the center console, then disconnect the OD wires, then unwind the wires until there was enough play to remove the ****. I don't see how anything could be blocking it...unless, the **** is not all the way in place. Are you sure you got both screw holes lined up and not just one? Anyway, sounds like you need to pull up the center console.
