what is gas mileage of your maxima at local?
i used to get 16/17 local also. I resetted my ECU and I have been getting 19/20 local and 23/24 highway
I just filled up yesterday and had a 23.2 mpg (which i calculated myself)
Reset your ECU (search here on how to do it for the 02/03) and you will get better gas mileage and no lag (if any)

okay..here are the instruction on how to reset your ECU
MAKE SURE YOUR ENGINE ISN'T ON
here is the link to the instructions: http://www.technosquareinc.com/350reset.htm (it says 350z but it works with our 2002/2003 maxima as well)
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.
If the CEL light continues to remain ON, repeat the above steps. Timing is EXTREMELY critical to resetting the ECU.
Good Luck (not really needed but hopefully it works out for you)

Wow, you guys seems kind of low. I get 24 or so during the week...mix of highway and city. On one trip this weekend, about 80 miles highway, I got 31-32. Buts thats based on what the computer is telling me.
Is the computer off?
I've never calculated myself since the Max calculates it for me.

Don't use the calc! Check real gas mileage.
