Anyone find 3rd gear hard to engage into? And what damage is done going 25 in 4th???
Getting used to my 2000, going up from a 97... i find 3rd gear to be particularly hard to engage. It's virtually impossible to get into 3rd if cruising in Neutral at 30 or so, even rev matching is tough and if it does engage, it will not be easy and i feel like i'm wrestling the shifter..
now, what i do because of this, is when cruising in Neutral at around 25mph, i just throw it into 4th because 3rd is a ***** to engage and 2nd would leave the RPMs too high and i don't need to be going quicker, i want to retain my speed..
Is any damage being done when i go into 4th at 25-30 mph?
i heard different things,
that no damage is being done, to damage to trans/clutch to damage to engine bottom end / crankshaft?
thanks

Something is wrong with your transmission, but in terms of 4th at 25 probably ok, although I've heard it's not a great idea to run an engine on too low RPM, but I don't know what 4th wouold put you at. I'm guessing around 1300...
I am already running fresh Redline fluid in it right now.
no short throw shifter either.
oh well.
i can still drive it fine, just wondering if i cause any damage going in low speed at a high gear.
why would my gas milage suffer though? I'm keeping my rpms low..

I would get that checked out. My 2k max loves 3rd gear. It begs to be in 3rd gear. I can hear it from the parking lot now: "Drive me, find a windy road and put me in 3rd."
But seriously, 4th gear early shouldn't hurt so long as you are about 1500+ rpms. Below that, you are probably introducing unecessary stress. Run 2nd gear up a little higher until you can get 3rd gear checked out.

I habitually missed third when racing. Then, once I got my short shifter - I could barely get it into third. The problem was my shifting. Make sure you shift STRAIGHT forward for third (i.e. 12:00 position) rather than at an angle (2:00).
Once I started making sure my elbow was away from my body and my hand was going straight forward (and there was no big drinks in the holder) I had no problems.

yeah, i got a hang of it now, i hit 3rd fine 95% of the time when upshifting from 2nd.. but popping it into 3rd from neutral, or downshifting from 4th is really, really hard.. unless a rev match it perfectly and double clutch, it won't go..
If synchros are particular to each gear (I think they are), then would anybody else say that your syncrhos are fried for 3rd? I know that the only time I have any issue with changing gears is sometimes putting it in reverse requires me to first put it in first and engage the clutch ever so slightly, then it slips right into 5th. I have the same issue on my 93 sentra, so it doesn't bother me.
