New to this forum - HID lights question...

Hi All,
I am kind of new to this forum and to the Maxima world and i would have some questions for all of you in the future. I am really excited to be part of this community.

The first thing that i would like to know is how true is it that HID headlights on 2003 Maximas get stolen very often and that it's very easy to do so??? I live in North CA (safe area) and i would like to know if i should take any special precautions before someone steals my headlights. Or is all this just an exagerated rumor? Do many people actually get burned?

Any efficient way to protect the headlights without instaling a $1000 aftermarket alarm? Any additional mounts? Please share some tips/tricks.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome!

Yes, it's VERY very true in NJ, NY, LI, and surrounding areas.

Some counter-measures that have SOME affect, but nowhere near the level of protection we'd hope, is TimWs' tamper proof bolts, Nissans' hood latch "theft deterrent" system, and something new they are offering that appears to be coded paint dots that mark them so police can identify if they are stolen and recovered later w/stickers that warn of the dots.

None of these really make a worthwhile theft deterrent IMO. Your ONLY defense is parking smart, ie where they are less likely to have access like a garage at night or where they'll be seen if they do try.

It happens very often. About 2 blocks away from my house when I was on my way to school I saw 2 Maximas who were parked on the same block, and they were both hit, wires dangling and no eyes, what a sad sight to see.

I hope you are right, i really do. I can't accept that somebody may take away the headlights from my Maxima.... i will be so irritated.

I was thinking about putting an additional, better, more sensitive alarm system that actually protects external parts of the car but i am not sure how it can be integrated with the factory alarm?! Anyone done it? How complicated would the installation be?

Thanks!

I have personally seen HIDs being stolen out of a 5th gen. It happens so quickly, you'd be amazed if you saw it with your own eyes.

They will cut your horn wires or disable your horn to avoid alerting anyone.

Then, they pop your hood and yank your lights out.

One thing you could do is wire up an additional anti-theft horn and if you're creative, an additional battery to power it. If you put the horn in an inaccessible location and wire it stealthily, it will hopefully scare them away. Within 10 seconds of popping the hood, they can cut the battery wires. The extra 10 seconds of horn sounding from your hidden horn could be enough to make them run down the street.

Just a suggestion.

Edit: I just realized I might be of a few who have seen it happen. I just watched the video (I didn't see it in person in case someone is wondering ).

Does anyone know if the TSB for the HID theft deterant kit is worth getting taken care of? I'm not sure exactly what it entails and how it would secure your headlamps anymore than they already are.

yea I just got it done today. My service advisor told it would take up 2 hours to take the light out, Just like new 04 max or I35. The light accutually moves when you grab on to it, now it doesn't move unless you shake it very hard.

Thats good to know. Luckily, here in Ohio, we don't have much of an issue with this, but the thing about theives...if they want it, they're going to take it, no matter how much precautions you take. Sucks.
