New Max owner here

I've been registered on this board for quite some time. I didn't post much because I wasn't a MAxima owner. I did post semi-frequently a while back because I was looking in to getting a Max.

Well, yesterday I got one. It's a '03 SE, automatic and dark blue with 19K miles on it. This car is our primary family vehicle. It joins a '88 Mustang 5.0 and '87 Buick Grand National in my garage. My wife wil be the primary driver of the Max.

congrats! you got some nice cars there, especially the Grand National.

Who cares about the Maxima. Got any mods on the 5.0 or the GN?

Congrats to your wife. She may even let you drive it once in a while. Most likely to the gas station to fill her up with 92 or 93 octane.

You kiind of sound like one of the salesmen at the Nissan dealer yesterday.

We had completed the deal and were waiting for the Max to getout of "Detail". I was sitting in the lot in the GN and one of the salesmen asked if he could buy it. I told him "Sure, $25K', and he said, "I know it's worth every penny, and I'd pay it if I could come up with the money". And there were some other salesmen standing around and he yelled over to one of them, "You think your Maxima is fast? I'll bet it can't beat this! I'll bet you $500!! American-made, baby!!" It was pretty funny coming from a Nissan salesman.

She'll put in 87. She put in 87 when she drove the GN. I'd get in it and drive it after she had it for a while, step on the gas a little and watch the Scanmaster register the knock retard. So then I'd either have to drive that 87 out (nice and easy), or go add some Sunoco 100 to it.

She's not going to like it when I tell her the Max needs high octane fuel.

Are there any scan tools available that can measure certain computer paramters, such as how much knock the knock sensor is detecting?

Good thing there are no octane police out there. I can't imagine using 87 in my Max. She probably will get by using 87 if she does not have a heavy foot. I don't about scan tools for imports because the Snap-On scanner we have at work does not have any software for imports. On some American vehicles, the scanner will show the knock sensor as being on or off. It basically reads "Knock detected. Yes or No" on the display.

Any OBD-II scanner will work (AutoTap, Auterra, etc) but unfortunately I don't believe the Maxima ECU has knock retard specifically as a parameter. At least my 99 doesn't, and I don't believe the 03 will be significantly different. It lets you monitor advance, but not specifically retard if you get pinging. I really wish it would like the GM L67, LS1, and other GM engines.

My Auterra (www.auterraweb.com) for Palm OS PDAs is a universal OBD-II scanner that works with all protocols. I believe the Maxima ECU runs on the ISO-9141 protocol which most imports generally do.

I love to watch GN's and TTA's run at the track. So silent -lightly modded anyway- and deadly. To hear the turbo spooling is music to my ears. For whatever reason (maybe due to gears and rwd, these things get out of the hole so well !

Saw a GNX this past summer (311 of 547), guy had some custom work done, nice clean re-spray, only part of car that had trace of rust was the radiator support, but barely visible. Guy was running 12.2 at 113 mph with drag radials. It was 75 degrees. Car guys know how much turbo cars like the cold, had it been 45 degrees, that thing would have hit mid 11's at 115+.

Enjoy the slow car too pal

p.s. ditch the stock wheels, and get GNX wheels, very nice touch, imo.

The wife was gone a few hours today in her new Max. When she got home she was really praising it. She really loves it, especially compared to the GN which she previously had to drive regularly. She really likes the HIDs too.

Turbo Regals can be fast and everything, but they're nothing to brag about compared to the Max in areas other than acceleration. Remember, the GN is almost 20 years old. And it has that fine mid-'80s GM quality.

In a couple of days we're taking the Max on her maiden voyage: 600 miles from GA to IL.

How many gallons does the fuel tank hold?

Great. Then I should be able to fill up in Kentucky where gas is cheaper than in Tennessee and Illinois.

$19K

OK, I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but the "search" function on this site doesn't work and I have no owner's manual for the car.

How does the mpg setting work? I drove the Max today for the first time and was playing around with it. I hit the "trip" button on the steering wheel and noticed that the little display in the tach changed from a time, mph, mpg, dte. "dte" was the only thing that wouldn't reset - what is it? I'm assuming "mph" is the average speed you've got since you reset it? Or is it the average speed over the past X minutes? Same question regarding "mpg" - average since reset, or a "rolling average" over the past X miles or minutes?

Also, how you you change the tone on the radio (bass & treble)? Thanks.

FYI, DTE: Distance to empty. can't reset that. Don't have a trip computer in my 2k1, but keep in mind most owners state the mpg readout is 3-4 miles off (optimistic).
