2K 5sp Trans Problems

Has anyone out there had problems with their 2000 5 Sp?
Mine started making some slight whininging noise about a week ago, which gave way to periodic grinding noises. I took it to a trusted shop, and he told me it was the trans starting to go. The next day, I noticed the nasty smell of the trans fluid, as it was now leaking. I took it to another shop on Monday to discover the source of the leak - they replaced the seal, but it didn't work ($140). After taking it to an excellent trans shop, they told me that the main bearings (carrier) were shot, which explains the leaking oil. So my options are: 1) Rebuild it for $1500 - $2000 2) Buy a brand new trans for $2225 plus install = $3K total 3) Sell Maxima
I've got 81,000 miles (75% highway @ >90mph)
Anyone else out there hear of a similar issue?

does the noise go away when U step on the cluch pedal ? Does it do it with the pedal not pressed in ? does the noise change ? My throw out bearing is making a noise when pedal is not pressed in. That is ok, my clutch is due for repleacement anyways- new ACT is sitting at my toolbox at work- 1 hour worth of work. BTW I got 72 K miles on my 01 5spd GXE, and this is the 2nd clutch- counting the OE that was in it and the ACT that I got in it now. I'm on a ACT now, repleacing it with another ACT in about 2 weeks. I am VERY hard on my car- Wide fukn open throttle all the time almost.

mines doing the same thing. well, i dont know if its the same thing. Mines makes a whinning noise when i slowly let go of the clutch when trying to move from a dead stop. but once the car is moving, the noise goes away. I dont know if i just need a new clutch or if its the tranny. Shifting is smooth though and no problem putting the shifter into gears so i dont think its the clutch but I could be wrong. anyone else have this happening to them>

If you do decide to rebuild it shouldn't be more than $1200. I got all my bearings & synchros for like $800+labor.

McLee...had exact same prob with my 2k SE almost from day 1...after enough complaining...around 25k it was diagnosed as a bad throwout bearing and replaced... it was worse when i had more people in the car or after driving in warmer weather. All better now though
