2K2 brake questions....

I will be upgrading my stock brake system to Powerslots rotors (F & R) and Hawk HPS pads in the front, Raybestos QS in the rear. My question is this: what do I do regarding the shims?? I was on Courtesy Nissan's parts website to order some other things (PCV valve, belts) and I saw they have Brake Hardware Kits, but what is included in these?? Is this what I need to compliment the new pads & rotors?? I tried looking at the product, but their website does not show anything.

You might try calling a Nissan service department and asking them what is included in the hardware kits. Its likely to be the backing plate (I believe that is what they are called) that attaches to the pads. I can't imagine anything else that costs so little.

As for the shims, I can't help you as I'm not sure what you mean by shims.

When I said shims, I was referring to the backing plate that attaches to the pads. This shim/backing plate is to help reduce the vibrations. I'll give them a call and I'll post the contents of the brake kit

I have the Stillen x-drilled rotors front and back with Hawk HPS pads (on front). I use the shim/backing plates on the pads. No problems. Hope this helps.

ajahearn, so you were able to re-use the original shims on your Hawk HPS pads?? If so, this is good news.

FYI: The Brake Hardware Kit includes the following:
shims (for back of pads)
clips (for top & bottom of pads)
Disc Brake Quiet

all for $19.96

I am planning to replace my front brake pads myself as well. Will I be able to reuse
shims and clips from original front pads?

Thank you.

I am debating this issue right now. I might just buy the Hardware Kit to avoid the hassles.

My original shims worked on the hawk pads. There was only one noticeable difference between the factory and Hawk pads. This was the OEM pads had the wear indicator (metal scrape bar) on both the inboard and outboard pads. The Hawk pads had them only on one pad. A previous poster had asked about this as a brake shop would not install his Hawk pads when they saw this "problem". Obviously it would be desirable to have them on both pads but I check my pads periodically anyways so its not a problem for me.

If the shims are still in good condition, you can reuse them. Unfortunately, you don't know their condition until the brake is taken apart.

So when installing, I am assuming the pad with the wear indicator goes on the outside??
