It's a charcoal-impregnated filter for the HVAC system. I got mine from Courtesy Nissan (after seeing it on their web site, I decided to order it).

It takes <10 minutes to install - involving removing the glove box then slipping the filters inside the system. I didn't check, but it is probably a standard item on the I30, that allows Nissan to save $30 on the price of the Maxima by excluding.

The only negative is that is has to be replaced annually...

Presumably it removes dust, pollen, etc. from the interior air. My wife, daughter and I all have allergies, so I figured it couldn't hurt.

Although I haven't had a problem with the Maxima, each of wife wife's last 2 vehicles (both Ford products) had mold problems with the ductwork.

Is it stricktly add on?

Is the filter strictly an add-on for the Maxima? Do the filters come in any package? I like the idea. I, too, always wondered exactly what it does.

I would hate to order one only to find out when installing that I already have one.

I tend to think that you will still encounter mold problem regardless of the filter. The brochure shows that the filter is placed before the evaporator. And I think the cause for the mold problem is due to the moisture on the evaporator... Am I right?

The in-cabin filter was an option for all of the Maxima models. If it was not on your invoice at time of purchase, you did not get it. One thing that was odd was on the Courtsey NIssan web site they said to replace the filters every six months or 7500 miles. The info with the filter (from Nissan) said replace every year or 30,000km (18,000+ miles). Is Courtesy trying to sell more by changing the replacement schedule or do they know something the Nissan does not?

The instructions come with the filter. A slightly different (and more explicit) version can be found at http://www.courtesyparts.com.

Thanks. I decided to actually open the box and, low and behold, there were the instructions. btw. They are EXACTLY the same as on that web site. Well I tried to take apart the glovebox to no avail. The thing doesn't want to drop out so I didn't force it. I'll bring it in and watch the Nissan guy do it to see what I'm doing wrong.

I managed to get by with the Courtesy instructions. I didn't understand what "clips" they were referring to, though. I will say (I think) there were two screws underneath the glove box which were somewhat hidden: on the left side on the right side, not to mention the latch assembly.

There was a part of the glove box wedged behind the paneling on the right side which needed some nudging. Push in on the side of the glovebox and pull out slightly.

If you get the screws out you can giggle the glovebox assembly and see where it is getting hung up. Be careful not to yank loose the airbag. Does it blow up in your face if so?

It's not bad once you see how it is put in there. Re-assembly is the same. Attention getting the piece on the right to fit back takes some negotiation.

Ya. It's the "clips" I couldn't find. Undid all the screws, including the botom 2 you mentioned. I guess I'll use a little more force and try again.

The clips referred to in the instructions are for the I30, not the Maxima. The clips hold the glove box finisher (cover to hide the bottom and wiring, for the I30 owners.

That's what I thought. Based on the picture in the instructions I thought there was a piece missing from my car....lol
