Microfilter: how much to replace and do you need to?

I am getting a car with the in-cabin microfilter, which I didn't actually want but it came with the car. Three questions:
1. How much does it cost to replace? a) the filter itself, b) with labor, etc at a dealer
2. How easy is it to replace, or do most people take it to the dealer?
3. After the 6 months or year when we are recommended to change it, can we simply remove the filter and not put a new one in?
thanks, sentient.

Micro-filter for 2K Max
Yes you have to replace it at least twice a year. I just ordered mine from courtesy nissan. They have them for $40-something bucks. It's easy to install, just remove the battery and it's right below the battery. Hope this helps........
Re: Micro-filter for 2K Max
Mine doesn't have one... So I assume you could just NOT put another one in after 6 months... (although, if you have allergies, it might be a smart idea to put one in for the spring)

MY car didnt came with one, but I had one installed. I live in NYC so there is a good amount of smog everywhere!! I can tell you, it does work!! It removes about 80% of the odor that comes through the vents, only under extreme conditions
ex: tailgating a bus would you smell some exhaust fume. It cost me about 40 bucks for the filter, if you install it yourself, it will take about 30 min or so. $20 if you take it to a shop.

What nissan dealer service said...
I called a nissan dealer service dept and asked my questions. He said, no I wouldn't even try myself to take off the glove box, and yes if it comes installed from the factory with one, you need to have a filter installed at all times, and the cost is $150 ($48.95 parts plus labor) for them to replace it, but he wouldn't change it until 30,000 miles (not 7500 or whatever).
However what I don't understand is $42 is the invoice price for the factory install of the microfilter, so this leads me to believe they don't install any other special equipment, and thus you should be able to operate without a filter, if we choose just to discard the old one and not replace it. Anyone have any insight into this?

what a lying sack of dung (dealer)...
$150!!!!! Scam!!! And NO, the car is delivered without a filter, so it cant be required. Its up to you if you want it.
yes, dropping the glove box isnt everyone's cup of tea. But I can follow directions, and good ones come with the filters. It clearly tells you what to be careful of. I did it in 15 mins.. not sure where 100 in labor comes from. Also, the dealer is supposed to charge 30 mins for that, so they are padding that too.
I hate hearing that crap...

sorry.. but $150 for this is just
excessive! I just hate to hear the dealer telling people that.
1. No, its not stock.
2. it filters incoming air. Its not HEPA, its charcoal charged. It filters out some pollens and cuts most odors (from the charcoal.)
Follow that link above. they have a diagram of how it works and install instructions to boot.

It's an activated charcoal filter for the hvac system...
Just so I am clear, the car does not come stock with the actual charcoal filter BUT that filter can be put in any car. That is, you don't have to buy anything aside from the $44.00 charcoal filter. Right?

Nothing to buy except the filter...

so my main question is...
If you've ordered one from the factory with a filter, is there no problem with at some point removing that filter, and not installing a new one. I would assume it would be as if you've never installed one in the first place. I know with electrostatic filters, for example, I don't think you can operate the system without the filter installed. If this is a completely passive system, then I guess it doesn't matter.
