All I can say is that my 03 or 350 donot idle no where near as smooth as my old 01 and 97. The Max idles in drive at 700 rpm when warm and in park its at 750. Since day one I can feel way more vibration in the wheel with the 3.5's vs the 3.0's, when Nissan bored it out alot of the smoothness went away IMO

On a cold morning, it idles at 1200 rpm. After 15 minutes, it drops to 700. Both at park.

that's why i have a rough idle. after i put on the injen, cattman y, and greddy, my idle dropped to under 500. it's not bad, but i'm always gonna feel a rough idle. and yeah, only a consult II can adjust it.

interesting..... my car does the same ****. doesnt take 15min to warm up maybe 3-5min when the temp is in the 30s. i start it up and the needle sits around 1200-1400rpms. the rpms dont go down all the sudden but creep slowly till the normal 650-750 idle sometimes ~450 when the A/C is off. im wondering if i might have some issues!

will

it's simply because we changes the "normal" air/airflow values, etc... so now it idles different. a consult will adjust the idle accordingly on the new air intake values and then idle correctly.

i want a new motor. i could have done a motor swap almost 2 times if i wouldnt have bought those headers. for some strange reason they dont work on my car. i have almost 60k and drive pretty hard. new motors have been purchased for ~800. wouldnt be bad to have a extra engine and add some goodies before i drop it. just thinking.....

Ditto.

Funny thing is I was actually studying the tach, to get an idea at what it idles at, just a few days ago, and here it is in a thread now.

your opinion...

you guys who are saying it takes 15 minutes for your engine idle to go from 1200 to 700-ish... are you letting it run for 15 just sitting there, or do you warm it up like you're supposed to?

steps to properly warm up your non-snow-covered car...

1. open door
2. sit
3. close door
4. start car
5. fasten seat belt
6. adjust radio
7. DRIVE SLOWLY. After approx 1-2 miles the engine will be "warm".

if your car has snow on it you can start it and scrap/clean then drive.

Sad to say it but I agree with Monte. I briefly had a 2000 SE with 40k miles on it and it was smoother than my 2003 SE has been at any point during the 7k miles I've put on it so far. But to me it's a fair trade-off for the nice power increase we get with the 3.5.

I don't know about that. I usually let the car warms up for about 3 minutes and then go slow before entering the highway.

it's been shown time and time again... proper way to warm up a car is start it, let it sit for approx. 15 seconds, then drive lightly for the first mile or two.

letting the car sit for 3 minutes does nothing but waste 2:45 seconds worth of gas. Everything has started moving after the first 15 seconds or so and you get ZERO mpg while your car is sitting idle.

it won't hurt your car to sit for 3 minutes, but it won't help, either.

For 2:45, the engine oil temp slowly rises, which indicates that the engine is ready to go.

Have you read your owner's manual? It says to always let the car idle for AT LEAST 30 seconds before driving off. I tend to agree with you that idling for more than a minute is useless because the car warms up more efficiently while being driven slowly, but 15 seconds isn't enough time.

My base idle was 625 rpm according to the Consult II and I had it bumped to 650.

ok, I'll give... 30 seconds. It takes me at least 15 just to get my seatbelt on, find a good song, arrange stuff (you'd be amazed how much 'stuff' 2 kids need)... but sitting for 3 minutes is a waste.

I agree 100 % with ya wannabe, remember folks we're using 5W weight motor oil, 15 sec. is plenty. Just be easy the first couple of miles and that VQ will be fine. long live the MAX
